Stephen "Steve" Jay Bender
February 20th, 1952 - June 9th, 2025
Stephen Bender, 73, passed away at his home in Littleton, Colorado, on Monday morning, June 9, 2025. He was surrounded by dear friends and family during his final weeks.
Born on February 20th,1952 in La Grange, Illinois, Steve was the first child of June Maxine Jacobs and Francis Maurice Bender. After graduating from University of Illinois with a Masters degree in Civil Engineering, and further attaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license, he embarked on a rewarding career, traveling extensively and managing pipeline construction projects around the globe. Known for his warmth, humor, and collaborative spirit, Steve brought his full self to his work – forming close friendships that lasted for decades, and enriching the lives of colleagues everywhere he went.
In 1983, Steve married Christine Bender, and upon their move to Denver, they acquired a wild plot of land on the Western Slope, which they named “The Benderosa.” This haven became a natural playground for their beloved dogs, horses, and cherished friends. For seventeen years, Chris and Steve nurtured two beautiful horses, and Steve’s deep love for trail riding helped him forge lasting friendships with other riders. He and his horse Beauty even dedicated over five years as volunteer patrollers for Jefferson County Open Space.
Although an engineer by profession, Steve was a passionate lover of the arts. In a conversation with Steve, one might hear a pertinent quote from Shakespeare, followed by an intricate pun, a humorous limerick, or a spontaneous rendition of a beloved Bing Crosby tune. An outing with Steve was always an entertaining tour through his favorite cultural inspirations.
With his joy, generous nature, and unwavering loyalty, Steve was a true friend to his companions. His hearty laugh and warm presence brightened every gathering. He will be deeply missed, but forever live within our hearts.
He is survived by his sister, Debra Caro; niece and nephew, Natalie and Ben Caro, who lovingly referred to him as "CUS" (Cool Uncle Steve). He and his now ex-wife Christine remained friends.
A memorial gathering celebrating Steve's life will be held at the Riverwalk Clubhouse, 2751 W Riverwalk Cir, Littleton, Colorado, on August 17, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Friends and family are warmly invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to NPR, PBS, and Colorado FIRST, an organization inspiring young Coloradans’ interest in science – causes close to Steve’s heart.
“Good night, sweet prince, And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”
