Helen Van Dam, of Sewell, NJ passed away on June 26, 2025 at Juniper Village in Washington Township. She was 94 years old.
Born in New York, New York to Anthony and Margaret (Marcheso) Desposito, she was predeceased by her husband, Walter O. Van Dam, daughter, Joyce Winkler and her sister Rose Haenichen. Helen is survived by daughters, Carol Balbo (Dr. Frederick ), Linda Coremin (Christopher), Marilyn Jacobs (Harold) and Jacqueline Touw (Timothy); Sister, Rita Castline (John); Grandchildren, Brandon, Beth, Gregory, Carrie, Allie, Andrew, Paul, Bennett, Margaux, Brian, Dustin Dale and Eric; 9 greatgrandchildren, Evie, Leah, Lindsay, Jack, Cole, Mason, Kelsea, Matthew, Ryleigh, and #10 on the way! Helen is also survived by many extended family members and dear friends.
Helen worked for John Robert Powers Modeling Agency in New York City during her younger and teenage years. Helen worked as a Medical Assistant for a private practice in Wayne, N.J. for over 20 years before retirement. After retirement, she continued to keep busy with a part-time job at Allstate Insurance, where she mastered computer skills and impressed her coworkers with her adaptability. Helen loved cooking, baking, and creating meals for her family. Helen’s home was a gathering place where family and friends were always welcome. A lifelong animal lover bringing her beloved Peaches to be her companion at The Landing. Shopping was one of Helen’s favorite hobbies, especially when it came to finding beautiful pieces of jewelry. In 2022, Helen privately published a children’s book titled Quackers, which she considered to be one of her greatest accomplishments. Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She adored spending cherished time making memories with her family.
Helen will be laid to rest at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in a private ceremony.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 17th, 2025, at 11:00 am at Juniper Village, 120 Town Centre Blvd, Sewell, NJ 08080, in the Theater Room.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Gloucester County Animal Shelter, 1200 N. Delsea Drive, Clayton, NJ 08312
