Adair Funeral Home - Dodge
James Richard McLain, Sr
January 7th, 1946 - June 26th, 2025
James Richard McLain Sr., 79, passed away peacefully on June 26th, 2025. Born on January 7, 1946, in Holden, Massachusetts, Jim was the middle child of Glenn T. McLain and Eileen B. (Ottoson) McLain, both deceased. He is survived by his sister, Anne Marie McLain Vittoria and her husband Michael of Bristol, RI, and brother, Glenn T. McLain Jr. of Titusville, FL.
Jim was married to the love of his life, Mary (Turpin) McLain, from 1976 until her passing in 2015. Together they raised two children: Erin Mary McLain, MD (deceased 2009), and James Richard (Rick) McLain Jr., who survives him along with his wife Brandy and their three children, Jack, Avery, and Taylor. Nothing brought Jim more joy than his family, and he took great pride in attending every concert, game, and event his children participated in.
Jim earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s in Education. He spent the early part of his career owning and operating McLain Greenhouses (1966–1986) and later dedicated himself to teaching biology and horticulture, where he inspired countless students.
Social and outgoing, Jim loved people and never missed a chance to share a story or a laugh. His lifelong love of horticulture began in 4-H and remained a constant thread throughout his life. He was a Past Master of Boylston Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, a past district representative for FTD Floral, and a lifetime member of the DuPage Horticulture School Association.
Later in life, Jim developed a passion for photography, capturing beauty in both nature and his many travels. He was a world traveler who visited all 50 U.S. states and more than 30 countries. He held dual citizenship in the U.S. and Ireland, and proudly kissed the Blarney Stone. He hiked the Grand Canyon multiple times, explored the Acropolis in Greece, cruised to Australia, witnessed the northern lights, and cherished trips to Hawaii with Mary.
Jim is also survived by his sister-in-law Theresa Putnam; sister-in-law Sharon Degulis and her husband Dennis; brother-in-law David Turpin and his wife Terri; and brother-in-law Michael Turpin and his wife Denyse. He leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Jim lived a full and vibrant life—always in motion and always connected to those around him. He will be remembered for his warm spirit, endless stories, and the love he gave so freely to his family and friends.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales Parish on July 5th, 2025, at 10 a.m., followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Francis de Sales Ministry to the Sick & Homebound.
