Thomas Kemper Alley
May 11th, 1935 - July 3rd, 2025
Thomas Kemper “Tom” Alley, 90, passed away on July 3, 2025, on Hilton Head Island, SC.
Born on May 11, 1935, in Richmond, VA, Tom was the beloved son of Annie and Drewry Alley. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School, where he ran track and sang in the A Capella Choir—early signs of the energy and quiet joy he brought to life.
Tom lived a quietly remarkable life filled with adventure, love, and loyal friendships. He was an avid tennis player at Three Chopt Recreation Club and played an integral role in the WCT/UVB Tennis Classic alongside Lou Einwick and Arthur Ashe, Sr. He raced cars at Southside Speedway and, with his wife Betty, spent many years racing their off-road Scout, Impatient. Together, they also enjoyed motorcycle adventures and participated many times in the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America with dear friends George and DeDe Cable.
Tom had a successful career with International Harvester before joining his best friend, Bill Harris, at Marine Development Corporation. In 1983, Tom and Betty relocated to Fort Lauderdale, FL, where they built and ran their own marine air conditioning and refrigeration business for 33 years. Known for his integrity and quiet wit, Tom was a trusted businessman and a strong partner in both life and work.
After moving to Hilton Head Island, Tom took great pleasure in simply sitting outside with Betty, watching the boats pass by. He was known for his subtle humor and his irrepressible knack for lighthearted mischief at the dinner table.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Alley of Hilton Head Island, SC; his children Thomas Page (Diane), Don (Greer), Dean (Lisa), Kimberly (Dave), and Penny (Andrew); seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave, Richmond, VA 23238 on Saturday, July 19th at 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s memory to Victory Junction, a cause he and Betty supported for many years.
