Hector Castro, age 88, was called home to the Lord on July 6, 2025. Hector was born September 25, 1936, and was raised in West Tampa. Hector was a devoted family man, a lifelong public servant, and a pillar of his community. His life was marked by dedication, service, and compassion — qualities he extended to everyone he met.

Hector served honorably in the United States Navy aboard the USS Lake Champlain during the Korean Conflict and was stationed for five years at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. Upon returning to Tampa, he helped run the family-owned M & A Garage before beginning a distinguished 25-year career with the Tampa Fire Department. As a member of the city’s first paramedic class, he was a pioneer in emergency medical services and eventually retired with the rank of Captain.

While still in the fire department, Hector’s work continued. He opened C & S Cabinet Shop, where he spent many years applying his skills and craftsmanship. He also served with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, retiring as a Deputy.

Hector was deeply involved in West Tampa’s Little League from the 1960’s through 1980s. He was also passionate about coaching baseball at Chamberlain High School and Tampa Bay Tech. He also served six years as the State Baseball Commissioner for American Legion Post 248, further reflecting his commitment to mentoring youth and building community through sports.

Hector is survived by his beloved family: children Deborah Martinez (Daniel), Vicki Ciucio (Andy), and Rodney Castro (Melissa); grandchildren Jason Martinez (Melissa), Kevin Martinez (Megan), Andrea Pergola (Eric), Felicia Sell (Justin), Alexis Campbell (Kirk), Tyler Castro (Emily), and Kyle Castro (Sara Canon); and great-grandchildren Jason Jr. and Marissa Martinez, Madeline and Amelia Martinez, Logan, Kolby and Emily Pergola, Isabella and Evelyn Sell, Mila and Hudson Campbell, and Charlotte Castro. He is also survived by nephews Adrian “Rick” Castro (Mildred), Allan McGraw, Randy Castro (Nancy), Craig McGraw (Ann), and Roger Castro.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Sylvia Castro; his grandson, Adam Daniel Martinez; and his second wife, Mercedes Cuesta Salas.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Hector’s honor on Saturday, July 19th at 2:00 PM at the Martinez Residence, 22559 Hale Rd., Land O’ Lakes, FL 34639.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Hector’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Hector’s legacy of service, strength, and love lives on through every life he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
