The Island Funeral Home & Crematory
Alice Foster Camp
April 27th, 1925 - July 5th, 2025
Alice Foster Camp, 100 years old of Hilton Head, SC, died peacefully in her sleep on the 7th of July, 2025. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Alice will always be remembered for her homemade biscuits, desserts, her determination and being a champion of the underdog or any dog for that matter.
Born on April 27, 1925, in Brooklyn, NY, Alice grew up to be the only daughter of Elon and Mary Witherbee Foster and was sister to her older brother, Jim. Wherever she lived, she was an active member of her community, particularly the church choir. She studied hard and was a graduate of Westbrook College and the Nursing Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Upon graduation with her RN pin, Massachusetts General offered Alice a position on their nursing staff, but it was 1949 and she was engaged to a handsome Naval Officer who wanted to take her to South Carolina. Alice and William Henry Camp were married on October 1, 1949. They were happily married for 43 years when he died unexpectedly in 1993.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Mary C. Benzenberg; her sons, William Henry Camp, IV, and Wade Foster Camp; her grandchildren, Henry Wade and Jeffrey Craig Benzenberg, Amanda C. Frataccia and Margaret C. Burke and William Henry Camp, V; and her great-grandchildren, Jay Foster Benzenberg, Beatrice Anne Benzenberg, twins Edward Henry and William Allen Benzenberg, Henry Wade Benzenberg, Jr. and Riley Wade and Samuel Wyatt Burke.
We would like to thank the Dogwood Memory Care staff at Cypress for their wonderful, thoughtful and compassionate care of Alice.
Alice and Bill came from a long line of gardeners who loved flowers, but she also had many favorite charities she supported, and if you would like to send a donation in her memory, please consider The Bargain Box at 546 William Hilton Pkwy, Hilton Head, SC 29928 or the ASPCA, PO Box 96929, Washington D.C. 20077-7127.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the future.
