Carol Sue Ballard

Carol Sue Ballard, 84, a beloved educator, traveler, and artist of Lacey, Washington, passed away of natural causes at her home on July 19, 2025. Born on July 17, 1941, in Litchfield, Illinois, Carol dedicated her life to inspiring the minds of everyone she met through her love of education.

Holding a Master of Education as a Reading Specialist from Kent State University, Carol spent decades teaching in public schools—both locally and abroad—where she was deeply respected for her passion and innovative approach to teaching. Her dedication to expanding young minds led her to create journalism programs that encouraged students to research, develop, and deliver sophisticated treatises—an experience that left a lasting impact on many.

Carol’s passion for education extended far beyond the classroom. In her later years, she remained active in the community—teaching art classes, launching genealogy research groups, and helping others stay current with new technology, to name just a few of her contributions.

She also had a great love of travel, especially with her closest friends. That passion took her to nearly every continent, as well as to countless destinations across the U.S. Often, these adventures were reflected in her artwork. Always, they deepened her connection to her travel companions and the experiences they shared.

Carol is survived by her daughter, Leslie, and Leslie’s husband, Scott; their two children, Logan and Mackenzie; her son, Patrick; her sister, Jan, and Jan’s children and grandchildren; and the countless students whose lives she touched throughout her life.

A private ceremony will be held in Carol’s honor on August 2. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to support the arts and educational programs at Panorama in Lacey, Washington, in honor of her enduring legacy.
