Beloved Outdoorsman, Veteran and Law Enforcement Leader

John Tyndall, 80 Beloved Outdoorsman, Veteran and Law Enforcement Leader

John passed away peacefully after a long illness, surrounded by the love of family and friends. He was the eldest son of John and Vera Tyndall. He is survived by brothers James of South Carolina and Joseph of New Jersey. At the time of his passing, he was a longtime resident of Plymouth, Minnesota — a place he had called home for more than 30 years.

Born in 1944 in Nyack, New York, John spent his formative years in the sleepy river town of Piermont, a place that would forever hold a special place in his heart. He attended local Piermont schools and graduated from Tappan Zee High School in 1962. Piermont was not just a hometown, but a source of enduring friendships and cherished memories. It was there that John learned the joys of fishing and crabbing from his father, John Sr., a passion he carried with him throughout his life. Even decades later, he often returned to Piermont to reconnect with old friends and relive the golden days of his youth.

Following high school, John enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving with honor as a Medical Technician in Korea and Germany. During his time in the service, he met and ultimately married Air Force Nurse Patricia Sweeney. After their discharge, they began their life together in Patricia’s home state of South Dakota. They remained together until her passing. In 1992, John married Laurie Brown, a South Dakotan who shared many of his interests in the outdoors. She was a great source of support to him as they traveled together across the country where John, as President, would speak at various law enforcement conferences.

As an avid outdoorsman, John found South Dakota’s wide-open spaces and rich natural beauty a perfect fit. The Midwest became his adopted home for the next half-century.

John dedicated his professional life to law enforcement, where he served with distinction at both the state and federal levels. His career culminated in his role as President of the National Drug Enforcement Officers Association — a position that brought him great pride and reflected a lifetime of commitment to justice and public service.

John’s life was marked by duty, friendship, and a deep love of nature. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his deep loyalty, and the sense of integrity he brought to all he did.

His remains will be laid to rest in New York and South Dakota, two places that held deep meaning to him. The Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill, New York near his childhood home, and Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota, a standing testament to the life he built in the Midwest. John’s legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and in the

memories of those who knew and loved him. Details of services and interment will be shared later.
