Kurt Wilson Sinclair, 67, of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away on July 25, 2025 after a long battle with

cancer. Born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Kurt’s early passion for science was evident. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Clarion University in Clarion, Pennsylvania and a Master of Science degree in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh, he began a storied career as a physics teacher at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland. In May, after teaching more than 1000 students, he retired after 36 years. In 2018, Kurt was awarded the Finneran Faculty Scholar award, the highest honor a teacher can receive at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. In 2024, the Kurt Sinclair Endowment was created at St. Andrew’s to support faculty compensation and growth. Prior to working at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, he was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, serving as an instructor at Naval Nuclear Power School. It was while teaching at Naval Nuclear Power School that his love of teaching was ignited. Some of his other achievements include attending a summer program at Fermilab, working a summer program at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and working as an instructor for Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth at Washington College in Chestertown, MD. Additionally, Kurt performed his US Navy Reserve duty at the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Kurt loved physics, astronomy, and Superman, but most of all, he loved his family. He and Penelope met in college, wed in December of 1981, and were married for 43 years. He was a proud father to Aynesleah, Trevalyn, Ashlyn, and Halsey. He is beloved by his family and will be deeply missed. Kurt is survived by his wife, Penelope; daughters, Aynesleah (Joshua), Trevalyn, Ashlyn, and Halsey (Prince); his grandchildren, Greyson and Caellum Laird; mother, Gloria Sinclair; brothers, Richard (Maria), Lance (Tina), Scott (Diann), Craig (Marcena), and John (Sandia); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard D. Sinclair. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring, MD 20910. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Kurt Sinclair Endowment at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland (8804 Postoak Road, Potomac, MD 20854).
