Carol Harris Harper—beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend— passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, in Charleston SC. Born in Washington DC
on November 7,1943, Carol, daughter of Charlie and Mae Harris, graduated from Elizabethtown High School and the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. At UK Carol met the love of her life, Sam Harper, whom she married in June of 1965. They made their home in Danville, KY, where their children Paul and Sally were born. Carol taught middle and high school English in Lexington and Boyle County. An avid reader, Carol was active in book clubs in both Danville and Elizabethtown. A volunteer for Habitat for Humanity as well as a lifelong Baptist and active member at the Lexington Avenue Baptist Church in Danville and the Severns Valley Baptist Church in Elizabethtown.
Preceded in death by her husband Sam, Carol leaves behind her brother Dr. Russell Harris (Donna) and sister Julie Smith (Paul); son Paul (Cecelia); grandsons Samuel and Benjamin; daughter Sally (Doug) and grandchildren Olivia and Ian; niece Megan, and nephews Harris and Alan, all of whom she deeply adored. Known for discriminating taste and impeccable style, Carol faced her latter years with grace and courage in the face of a debilitating illness. Her genuine interest in and compassion for others never waned.
A memorial service celebrating Carol's life will be held in the fall at Lexington Avenue Baptist Church in Danville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Carol’s memory to Lexington Avenue Baptist Church of Danville, Boyle County Habitat for Humanity, or a charity of your choosing.
