Edgarita (“Rita”) Arvilla (Lanterman) Kanrich was born May 23, 1929 in Ontario, OR to Rowena Lanterman (Lloyd) and Everett (“Bud”) M. Lanterman.  She had one older brother, Jack (“Bob”) Lanterman.  They lived in a tiny house on SW 4th Avenue ½ block west of S. Oregon Street. Bud had a Veltex service station on the corner of SW 1st Street and SW 4th Avenue and worked for the telephone company as well. Later they built a 3-bedroom stucco house ½ block further west but on the south side of SW 4th Avenue.  Rita lived in that house until she was married. That house is now relocated out by the Ontario airport.  Rita graduated from Ontario High School in 1947 and worked as a secretary for Grigg Brothers and Butler Insurance and Real Estate.

In 1952 Rita married Bill C. Kanrich in Ontario on May 23rd. Interestingly, Bill’s birthday was also May 23rd so throughout their marriage they celebrated both birthdays and their anniversary on the same day.  For those interested in astrology, they were both under the Gemini sign. They lived in a small house along Verde Drive in Ontario. Initially, Bill had an asphalt paving company.  In 1956 they had one son, Jay.  Shortly after that Bill sold the paving company and began work as a salesman for Square D, an electrical controls company. They moved to the Los Angeles area for a short time then Seatle, then Tacoma. They moved back to Ontario in 1963 where Bill began a construction company building homes and small commercial buildings until his retirement in the mid 1990s. While Rita worked at United Credit Service, a credit reporting company owned by Roweana and her husband, Ace’s Lloyd, she also served as Bill’s trusted advisor and partner in the family construction business, as well as being a homemaker and mother to Jay. For 28 years, from December of 1987 to December of 2015 she served on the Ontario Planning a Zoning Commission. She was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Daughters of the Nile fraternal organization.  Both she and Bill were active members of the St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Ontario.

After Bill’s retirement from construction, they enjoyed several years of traveling, visiting Mexico, England, Italy and Greece, and cruising through the Panama Canal. They continued this lifestyle until Bill’s unexpected death in 2009.

Rita is survived by son Jay and his wife, Kathy of Middleton, ID, and their two children, Jordyn also of Middleton, and Tyson of Seattle, nieces and nephews Bobbie (Lanterman) Thornfeldt of Ontario, Tim Lanterman of Ontario, John Lanterman of Boise, and Susan (Hartley) Wilcox of Yelm, WA, and their extensive families.  She is preceded in death by husband Bill, her parents and her brother.

Graveside services for the family held on Wednesday, August 13th, 2025.  Memorials can be made to St. Matthews Episcopal Church.

We Entrusted Edgarita Kanrich's Care To

Lienkaemper Funeral Chapel-Ontario

For over 100 years, the Lienkaemper Funeral Chapel has served the Ontario, Oregon, community with professional, compassionate care. Our story begins in 1907 when the Peterson family, who owned a furniture store in Ontario, helped with funeral arrangements and sold caskets from the store’s basement. Over the years, the business has grown and had a number of owners, partnerships and names. Among them was our current namesake, the Lienkaemper family, who purchased the family funeral home with the mission of helping families in the Ontario community. ...
