Sterling “Andy” Cicholas, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on July 4, 2025, at the age of 72, following a brave battle with prostate cancer. Born on April 26, 1953, in Petaluma, CA and becoming a resident in the scenic  town of Santa Cruz, Andy’s early years were shaped by a profound love for nature and the simple joys of life.

Andy was a proud graduate of Holy Cross Elementary and High School, later attending Cabrillo College and San Jose State University, where he earned an Associate of Science degree in Business. Throughout his life, he expanded his skills through certifications in Computer Science, Construction, and Real Estate. His career was marked by dedication and adaptability, including 14 years in management at Graniterock, work with GTE, and roles as a Mortgage Broker and Real Estate Agent. For the last ten years, he followed his passion by owning a landscaping business, bringing beauty and care to many homes and gardens.

In his youth, Andy thrived in martial arts, archery, and beach volleyball. As time passed, he found peace and joy in nature, often enjoying long walks through Nisene Marks State Park and along the beaches of New Brighton and Rio Del Mar. He loved traveling with his beloved wife, Judy, and their faithful yellow Labrador, Daisy, exploring the Central Coast and distant lands including Canada, Mexico, Turkey, and the Dominican Republic. He was a true lover of Disneyland and made many trips in his lifetime there with his family.

A lover of the arts, Andy delighted in both movies and musical theater, and shared these passions with family and friends. His days were often brightened by lively handball games with friends at the Imperial Tennis Club, where laughter and friendship created lasting memories.

Andy is survived by his devoted wife of 21 years, Judith Schellentrager; his sister and brother in-law Candy and Rick Zvolanek; his stepchildren Krista DeBrito (Matt) and Max Schellentrager; and his treasured grandchildren, Kaden and Kingsley DeBrito. He also leaves behind his stepmother, Dolores Cicholas, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will hold his memory dear.

A private family committal ceremony  was held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Santa Cruz. A Celebration of Andy's life will be on  Saturday October 18, 2025 at Sesnon House/Cabrillo College

2:30PM-5:30PM

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hospice of Santa Cruz County or the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, reflecting Andy’s caring and compassionate nature.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and staff at Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Santa Cruz Radiology, and the compassionate care and support from the devoted nurses and aides from Hospice of Santa Cruz County, as well as care givers from Pacific Angels Homecare.

Andy Cicholas will be remembered for all of the warmth, humor and love he freely gave. His spirit and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, forever cherished and honored.
