With deep love and sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Carmen Rosa Candanoza Polo, who entered her eternal rest on August 4, 2025, in Barranquilla, Colombia, at the age of 89, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on July 16, 1936, in Ciénaga, Magdalena, Colombia, Carmen lived a life defined by faith, service, and devotion to those she loved.
Carmen’s early educational years included studying at Escuela Normal Superior Maria Auxiliadora in Santa Marta, Colombia. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Bacteriology from Pontificia Universitas Xaveriana in Bogotá in 1966, and later her Master’s Degree in Clinical Microbiology from Columbia University in New York in 1975.
Her distinguished career spanned several esteemed institutions, including Hospital Universitario del Valle Evaristo García, Hospital Buenaventura, New York Presbyterian Hospital, ATCC, and the National Naval Medical Center. Known for her precision, dedication, and compassion, she left a lasting impact in the field of microbiology and on the colleagues she mentored.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Carmen was known for her unwavering faith in God our Father Almighty. A devoted Catholic, Carmen’s faith was the anchor of her life. She lived out her beliefs through acts of kindness, generosity, and encouragement. She traveled widely, but one of her most cherished journeys was to the Holy Land of Israel, where she was baptized in the River Jordan and walked in the footsteps of Scripture.
Carmen’s greatest joy was her family. She delighted in spending time with her family, including her two beloved sons and her grandchildren, pouring into their lives with unconditional love, compassion, guidance, and laughter. She was a champion of education, both in word and deed—helping many relatives with their schooling and inspiring everyone around her to pursue learning as a path to opportunity.
She is survived by her sons Raul Rodriguez (Jessica Rodriguez) and Alvaro Rodriguez (Candice Rodriguez); grandchildren Alex Rodriguez, Leila Rodriguez, Adrian Rodriguez, and Sofia Rodriguez; and brothers Humberto Candanoza and Guzman Candanoza.
Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, Maria de los Santos Polo and Domingo Guzman Candanoza; brothers Carlos Candanoza, Ricardo Candanoza, Armando Candanoza, Alfonso Candanoza, Enrique Candanoza; and sister Neli Candanoza.
Carmen will be remembered for her warmth, her wisdom, and her unwavering love for God, her family, and her friends. Her legacy of faith, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Carmen on Friday, August 15, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Advent Funeral Home, located at 7211 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22046.
Burial will follow on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 9:45 a.m. at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22201.
Con profundo amor y tristeza, anunciamos el pacífico fallecimiento de Carmen Rosa Candanoza Polo, quien entró a su descanso eterno el 4 de agosto de 2025 en Barranquilla, Colombia, a la edad de 89 años, rodeada de su amada familia. Nació el 16 de julio de 1936 en Ciénaga, Magdalena, Colombia, Carmen vivió una vida marcada por la fe, el servicio y la devoción hacia sus seres queridos.
Carmen inició sus estudios en la Escuela Normal Superior María Auxiliadora en Santa Marta, Colombia. Obtuvo su título de Bacterióloga en la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana en Bogotá en 1966, y posteriormente su Maestría en Microbiología Clínica en la Universidad de Columbia, en Nueva York, en 1975.
Su distinguida carrera profesional abarcó varias instituciones de gran prestigio, entre ellas el Hospital Universitario del Valle Evaristo García, el Hospital de Buenaventura, el New York Presbyterian Hospital, ATCC y el National Naval Medical Center. Reconocida por su precisión, dedicación y compasión, dejó una huella imborrable en el campo de la microbiología y en los colegas a quienes formó y guió.
Más allá de sus logros profesionales, Carmen fue conocida por su fe inquebrantable en Dios Padre Todopoderoso. Católica devota, su fe fue el ancla de su vida. La vivió plenamente a través de actos de bondad, generosidad y aliento. Viajó extensamente, pero uno de sus recorridos más apreciados fue a la Tierra Santa, de Israel, donde fue bautizada en el río Jordán y caminó siguiendo las huellas de las Escrituras.
La mayor alegría de Carmen fue su familia. Disfrutaba profundamente compartir tiempo con sus dos amados hijos y sus nietos, entregándose a ellos con amor incondicional, compasión, guía y alegría. Fue una defensora de la educación, no solo con palabras sino también con acciones, ayudando a muchos familiares con sus estudios e inspirando a todos a su alrededor a buscar el aprendizaje como un camino hacia nuevas oportunidades.
Le sobreviven sus hijos Raul Rodriguez (Jessica Rodriguez) y Alvaro Rodriguez (Candice Rodriguez); sus nietos Alex Rodriguez, Leila Rodriguez, Adrian Rodriguez y Sofia Rodriguez; y sus hermanos Humberto Candanoza y Guzmán Candanoza.
Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, María de los Santos Polo y Domingo Guzmán Candanoza; sus hermanos Carlos Candanoza, Ricardo Candanoza, Armando Candanoza, Alfonso Candanoza, Enrique Candanoza; y su hermana Neli Candanoza.
Carmen será recordada por su calidez, su sabiduría y su amor inquebrantable por Dios, su familia y sus amigos. Su legado de fe, bondad y dedicación seguirá inspirando a todos aquellos que tuvieron la bendición de conocerla.
La familia y los amigos están invitados a reunirse en memoria de Carmen el viernes 15 de agosto de 2025, de 4:00 p.m. a 8:00 p.m., en Advent Funeral Home, ubicado en 7211 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22046.
El sepelio se llevará a cabo el sábado 16 de agosto de 2025, a las 9:45 a.m., en Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22201.
