Matilda Marie Covert
July 31st, 1923 - December 8th, 2011
In Remembrance of Matilda Marie Covert July 31, 1923-December 8, 2011 Tillie, as she liked to be called, passed away gently and peacefully from complications of old age at Providence Hospital surrounded by three generations of family. She is survived by a large family of five children and their partners, seven grandchildren and their partners, as well as four great grandchildren. Children in order of age: Robert Youngren and wife Polly, William Youngren, Nancy Tromble and husband Ed, George Youngren and partner Stephanie Whitchurch, and Harriett Parks. Grandchildren in order of age: Layla Tromble and partner Clarissa Callesen, Ian Tromble, Bryan Winchester and wife Deva, Jeffrey Winchester and wife Patsy, Zachary Youngren, Nicole Pearson and husband Ben, and Chris Youngren. Great grandchildren in order of age: Gabriella Winchester, Jacob Winchester, Isaiah Winchester and Landon Youngren. She is also survived by her cat Tiffany. Tillie was born in Astoria, OR to Croatian immigrant parents. Her father was a fisherman that trolled the Columbia River for salmon. Tillie and her family were loyal patriotic Americans. She enlisted in the WAVES (The women’s branch of the Navy) and served honorably during WWII. Upon discharge she returned to Portland, OR where her parents lived. She owned the same home since 1952 and was able to reside there with the assistance of her family until the end of her life. She retired at the age of 67 after a 21 year career at Mt. Hood Community College. Tillie was kind, compassionate, and politically progressive. She had a quick wit and insightful manner that brought many people to confide in her. She had a non judgmental manner and accumulated a great wealth of friends of all persuasions, ethnic backgrounds, and orientations over her many years. She was a smart dresser and clever shopper. She always dressed in an elegant and fashion forward style. Our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother taught us compassion, acceptance, perseverance, generosity, and how to appreciate all life has to offer. She was loved by all who crossed her path! Arrangements by Autumn Funerals, Cremation & Burial, Tigard, Oregon.
