James Douglas Burkett
August 6th, 1923 - May 16th, 2012
James Douglas Burkett, 88, passed away May 16, 2012 at his home in Eaton, CO He was born August 6, 1923 in Van Lear, KY to Bertha Burkett. A veteran of World War II, Jim served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 as an Aviation Radioman Second Class. During his service he earned the American Medal and the Victory Medal. After his military service Jim worked as a coal miner in Logan, WV and Mount Morris, PA. He resided in Morgantown, WV. After retiring from mining, Jim and Juanita bought their first Dairy Queen in Westover, WV and in 1978 moved to Fort Collins, CO where he owned and operated the 8th Avenue Dairy Queen in Greeley. He retired as owner operator of a One Hour Martinizing Dry Cleaners in Fort Collins. Jim loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Juanita; three daughters, Brenda (Dave) Price, Denise Molina and Deanna (Corky) Smith; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by a half sister, Carol Ambrosetti. Jim was preceded in death by his mother; and half brother, Bill Boyd. The family wants to thank Marianne Lyons and Pathways Hospice of Northern Colorado for their excellent care and compassion in caring for Jim. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. May 21, 2012 at Adamson Chapel with Military Honors provided by U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to "Eaton Evangelical Free Church” in care of Adamson Funeral & Cremation Services, 2000 47th Avenue, Greeley, CO 80631.
