Tom Olivas, 49, died Saturday July 11, 2015 from injuries sustained doing what he loved to do, hiking. He had been training to climb Longs Peak, which he wished to complete in August 2015. He was a very caring man and proved this on the day he died. He was guiding friends to safety after the weather had taken a turn for the worse, making conditions very difficult to descend the mountain. Tom was born July 8, 1966 in Loveland, CO and was living in Thornton, CO. He graduated from Thompson Valley High School, Loveland in 1984. He graduated from the Police Academy in 1995. He later studied Electronics Engineering Technology at Devry University, where he was placed on the Dean’s List. He was currently a Project Manager at Level 3 Communications in Broomfield, CO. Tom had a special interest and gift in technology and electronics. He could take apart almost anything and put it back together. He also inherited a wonderful gift from this father, woodworking. He recently completed some beautiful pieces in his home and was working on a backyard project this summer. He acquired his cooking skills from his mother. Some of his favorite foods include Mom’s homemade tortillas and carne. Tom loved the outdoors and could be found doing many activities such as hiking, sky diving, boating, water skiing, rafting, snowmobiling, and more. He had taught himself how to play the guitar and had a love for music. He was a thorough, hardworking man, a good son, loving father, brother, uncle, a great friend and is loved by all who knew him. He had a great sense of humor, was always joking, and enjoyed comedies. During football season he was often teased by his family for his love for the Oakland Raiders. That was his favorite team for many years thanks to Kenny Stabler who was the quarterback 1970-1979. Ironically Kenny passed away at age 69 on Tom’s Birthday this year. Tom enjoyed life to the fullest. He was always trying new things and encouraged others to so the same. When hard times were thrown his way, he had the capability of making things light. He had so much joy in his heart and spread that joy to everyone around him. He was such a helpful person and will be missed greatly. He is survived by two daughters, Alexandria "Alex” and Selena; his father and mother, Jose and Elvira Olivas; brother, Jose Olivas Jr.; three sisters, Mary Santistevan, Olivia Olivas, Guille Farnham, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral service will be Friday, July 17, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at First Church of The Nazarene, 2515 West 16th Street, Greeley. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be sent to the family at adamsonchapels.com.
