Bert Gonzales

Albert "Bert" Gonzales of Greeley, Colorado, passed away on January 16, 2016 at the age of 87. Bert was born on September 27, 1928 in Trinidad, Colorado, to Mariano and Ascenscion Gonzales. Bert lived a courageous life, and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge in 1953 while serving as Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War. On January 19, 1956, he married the love of his life, Mary Slaughter. For Bert, the most rewarding part of life was spending time with his family, whether through traveling, fishing, or attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. Bert was also a man of great faith. Each Sunday, you would easily find Bert in church alongside his wife. Bert spent his career working as a security supervisor for the Pueblo Army Depot in Pueblo, Colorado. In his spare time, Bert could be found playing or watching sports. He played football and baseball for Trinidad State Junior College, and also enjoyed softball, basketball, and bowling. Bert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; his brother, Ruben; his sister, Gloria; his sons Steven, David (Kelley), Mark (Deborah), and John; his grandchildren Sandy, Shawn, Geoffrey, Nathan, Abbey, and Erinn, and his four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ernest, Ulysses, and Ben; and his grandchildren Amanda and Chadd. Visitation will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Adamson Chapel. A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., also at Adamson Chapel. The Funeral Mass will take place 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 25, 2016 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 915 12th Street in Greeley, Colorado. Interment will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
