Richard was born in Windom, Minnesota, to Bennerd and Elise (Langston) Stahl. The family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1944. Richard played hockey at Lincoln High and also joined the Air National Guard during his senior year of high school. His unit was activated during the Korean War and he spent six years as a plane mechanic in the Air Force. On returning from the service, he started his 40 year grocery career, where he spent his time at Lynch's in Hillsdale and Wizer's Foods in Lake Oswego. Shortly after returning from the service he wondered upon a goddess of a waitress at Biffs drive in. As she talked with all the guys, she said she would never go out with a guy with a dirty car. The next night Richard came in and said he washed his car and then Dad took Mom on a fishing and hiking date on her next day off. He didn't catch any fish but caught the biggest gift of his life in Mom. He married that goddess Mona Lee Gosselin on May 1st ,1954. Richard was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Beaverton, OR, where he was an usher and money counter. After retirement he was active in Saint Vincent de Paul at St. Cecilia's. He and Mona spent six summers working at Yellowstone National Park. Richard also enjoyed bowling, hiking, golfing, being outdoors and his dogs, especially Boo. Richard is survived by his wife Mona; his four children, Mike (Lisa), Kathy (Brent), Marylee and Matt (Sarah); Six grandchildren, Rachael (Garrett), Rory, Ryan (Christy), James (Alaena), Pennilynn and Bowen; Six Great grandchildren, Eli, Madison, Riley, Ella, Sammie and Jude; many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded by his parents, brother, and son, Richard Jr. A Catholic Mass will be held on Saturday February 20th 2016 at 11:00AM at St. Cecilia's Church in Beaverton, OR. Father Pat McNamee will be officiating. A reception will follow the funeral mass at the parish center. Richard will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flower, donations can be made in Richard’s name to St. Vincent de Paul at St. Cecilia’s Church in Beaverton.
