Jimmy O. Terry
July 24th, 1932 - August 19th, 2014
Obituary Jimmy O. Terry (Jim, Big Jim, Papa Smurf, Pop, Dad, Grandpa, Santa) PLEASE WEAR CASUAL ATTIRE FOR THE SERVICE Born July 24, 1932 (weighing a whopping 11 pounds), in Lockwood, Missouri, to Philip and Zoe Terry. He was raised along with four brothers and four sisters on a farm in Joplin, Missouri. Jimmy joined the United States Army on July 25, 1949, one day after turning 17. He served during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded two purple hearts for injuries received in combat. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on June 30, 1952 at Camp Carson, Colorado. Shortly after his military service he began his career of what would be more than 25 years of long haul, over the road truck driving. He worked for companies moving many families households possessions. He was so strong and could strap a washer to his backside, and carry it up stairs all by his self. Those strong hands would change and become gentle enough to hold and love a newborn baby. He came into our lives and family in 1961 when he met his future wife June, five children and a grandchild. He just didnt know what he would be in for the next 53 yearsJ Jim and June were married July 13, 1963, and just celebrated their 51st anniversary. Together they shared many over the road trips hauling furniture or anything else that needed to be sent by truck. During his truck driving years he would take some of the grandkids and son Jimmy across the country. Jimmy was proud to have a box as his seat as the truck at that time had no passenger seat. One memorable trip was made with grandson Steven. Grandpa Jim had been pulled over by a state patrolman. Grandma June told Steven the man was a cowboy because of the type of hat worn. Stevens reply was "Thats no cowboy, thats a peeceman, I pee on him." And he did! He loved every one of the grandchildren. One of the granddaughters memories of Grandpa Jim was when he would sneak up and lick their faces, yuck! Then he would give them and pretty much anyone else he could sneak up on wet willies in their ears. That would gross the girls out. His favorite tradition was birthday spankings. He would chase you down to give your spanking. Craig got thrown in the snow once on his birthday as grandpa didnt grab him quick enough for a spanking. His other careers included a bouncer/doorman at the Star Club Bar, where he met June. He worked as a Sawman at Georgia Pacific Lumber and Brookharts Lumberyard, where he lost his thumb. Jimmy retired three times, the last position was at the Tool Corral at The Home Depot store in the Southgate Shopping Center. Jim enjoyed cowboy bang em up shoot em up movies and anything with war in it. He enjoyed toe tapping music, also the belly rubbing belt buckle shining slow songs. Elvis, Eddy Arnold, Ray Price, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Dave Dudley, Roger Miller, Don Gibson and Patsy Cline were just a few favorites. Through the years he became Santa For Hire, where he would entertain at company parties for employees children. He enjoyed becoming Santa for the grandchildrens and great grandchildrens schools and other occasions. Great grandson Ron remembers grandpa coming to Midland School for a Christmas party. All of the children were excited and saying Santas name and he was here! Ron told them immediately "thats NOT Santa, thats my grandpa." Hobbies he enjoyed included woodworking, his trips to the flea market with Steven and anyone else that would go, telling stories and jokes, some very colorful and others just funny. He always made the best potato salad and chili that he would share with everyone. Any family gathering in the summer would not be complete without grandpas potato salad, which he reminded everyone it tasted so good cause he picked his nose first before mixing it up with his hands. After retirement he became chief cook, bottle washer, shopper and care giver. He would try different recipes and loved baking "Siss" cookies and many cakes. There was always something sweet on the kitchen counter. His sight failed him at times so Margie would write recipes in large print. He wanted to make banana bread and did! His family includes his wife June, children, Judy Timmerman (Jack), Margie McCullough (Dan), Kathy Hastings (Howard Browning), Jimmy Morgan (Sheila), Nancy Chavez (Eddie Three Eagles), Grandchildren: Lori, Troy Bill, Kim, Steven, Bob. Sarah, Shannon, DJ, Jamie, Ronnie, Mike, Sibyl, Clark, Lil Jim, Robert, Sommer, Samantha, Severina, Paul, Craig, Kelly and Virginia. 32 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. Siblings, Philip, Harold, John, Bill, Alice, Patsy, Lorraine and Jerry. Many nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. Furry partners, Rufus, Willie and Waylon will miss sharing his beard, bed, chair, lap and grandma June. He will have military honors. A reception will be held at Margie and Dans home, 1320 Langmeyer Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80904. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the family to help offset the final expenses.
