Mary Luzetta Blackstone was born at home on March 31, 1927 near Bayard, NE, to Charles and Mabel Blackstone. Her seven siblings, who all proceeded her in death, included Joe, Earl, Millie, Nathan, LaVern, Nolan and Charlotte. On February 27, 1949, Mary was married to Marlow Newman. They made their home on the ranch near Gregory, South Dakota, for 55 years. Although busy with ranch life, raising a family and a garden, Mary was actively involved in her church and held many offices in the Womens Ministries at the Assembly of God Church located over the border in Burton, Nebraska. She was also involved in her community and served on the election board in Tripp County for too many years to count. In her spare time, she enjoyed the Valley Reading Circle. During the high school term, Mary and the kids lived in Springview, NE. To keep busy, Mary managed the local drive-in. The high schoolers coming in always called her "Mom". She was Mom to many and loved her time there. Mary had many hidden talents, including theater. One highlight of her short-lived acting career was playing the lead role in the PTA play at Keya Paha County High School. The play was so popular they took it on the road to neighboring communities. In 2004, Mary and Marlow sold the ranch and retired to Colorado Springs to be close to children and their granddaughter, Jordan, who was the light of their lives. Before they moved, Jordan spent time on the ranch riding horses, four-wheeling, and otherwise exploring the great outdoors. Jordan was lucky to have her grandparents close by after they moved, and spent many hours with both Mary and Marlow. Grandma sewed American Girl Doll clothes (with matching outfits for Jordan) and enjoyed many happy hours cooking with Jordan in the kitchen. Anyone who was the recipient of Mary's famous hospitality and cinnamon rolls will miss her infectious smile and warm heart. There was always a place at the table for friends who stopped by. Mary was strong and steadfast in her faith and had a servants heart, having taught childrens Sunday School classes for 50 years. She was confident in the everlasting life promised to believers. Marlow preceded Mary in death in 2006. Mary passed away on December 19, 2018 following complications from a fall, after which she developed pneumonia. She is survived by her children, Terry of Gillette, WY; Roger of Colorado Springs; and Joie Edwards (Paul) of Colorado Springs. She is also survived by her granddaughter Jordan Martin (Clay) of Grand Prairie, Texas. Services will be held on December 27, 2018 at 11am at Living Hope Church located at 640 Manitou Blvd Colorado Springs, CO 80904 with burial to follow in Angora, Nebraska.
