After the war, he attended The University of Michigan, where he played hockey and baseball. He played hockey for the Wolverines for three seasons from 1949 to 1951. The Wolverines won the NCAA hockey championships in 1951, against Colorado College. While a student at the university, Joe met his future wife, Ann Rink, and they were married on April 22, 1949, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
