Paul Kenneth Hensley
April 26th, 1940 - August 28th, 2016
Obituary Navigator Paul Hensley passed into the presence of his Savior on Sunday, August 28, 2016, at 76 years of age. In mid-July, after he experienced some memory loss and difficulty communicating, it was discovered that Paul had a brain tumor. Paul grew up in Nebraska, where his father was a stationmaster for the Union Pacific Railroad. Paul came to Christ and met The Navigators at the University of Nebraska in 1960. He was part of Leroy Eims Collegiate ministry, the first official campus ministry for The Navigators. While at the university, Paul signed on with the Reserve Officers Training Corps and was given a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army. After He received a bachelors degree in journalism, he was sent to Korea. His experience overseas gave him a heart for cross-cultural ministry. After his Army service ended, Paul spent six months in Norway in 1965 learning from Navigator Jack Combs, and then went to live with Navigators Skip and Buzzie Gray in South Carolina. There he met Margaret Farley, and they were married on September 30, 1967. They jumped into ministry at the University of Texas in Austin, serving there until July of 1970. In 1971, Paul and Margaretand their newborn son, Dannyheaded to Malaysia to work at the University of Malaysia. Their daughter, Susan, was born during those early years overseas. Alan Chng, an international vice president for The Navigators, worked with Paul during that time. "We are grateful to Paul for helping lay the foundation for the Malaysian work as the national director in the 70s," Alan says. "To the Malaysians, Paul was unassuming and caring, hospitable and very gentle. He was a great servant leader. He had no agenda, he just served." By 1980, the ministry was ready to be turned over to the Malaysian staff, and Paul and Margaret set their sights on serving in Indonesia. They waited two-and-a-half years for a visa, finally arriving in 1983. They provided shepherding and counseling for Indonesian Navigator staff, becoming much-loved and respected spiritual mentors. Again, after almost a decade of service, the Hensleys turned the work over to the local leaders. They returned to the States in 1990, and Paul earned a masters degree in missions from Wheaton College in 1991. They spent the next two decades working out of Colorado Springs, helping develop communication tools for NavMissions; Paul taught workshops on culture and communications. Paul also led strategic survey trips to Europe and Asia to scout out possible locations for Nav ministry. After a 2007 interview with Paul and Margaret, author Sandy Fairservice wrote, "The Hensleys friends are all over the world and this missions-preoccupied couple are in touch with them all the time, encouraging, making connections, stimulating ministry through travel, writing and communications, making and giving media presentations and stimulating Navigator communications and communicators wherever they can." Paul was known as The Navigators unofficial photographer, with his camera never out of reach. Longtime friend and colleague Ed Scott said, "I first met Paul at the University of Nebraska during his senior year. He developed and used his journalism major through all the years of service, connecting and photographing people. He has undoubtedly photographed more Navigators than anyone. I think we will miss Pauls unassuming presence more than we expect." Paul is survived by his wife, Margaret; their son, Dan and his wife, Jen; their daughter Susan Scott and her husband, Rob; and four grandchildren. A public memorial service is being planned in Colorado Springs. Please pray for Pauls family to know the Lords peace in the days ahead. Thanks to Sandy Fairservice, author of The Asia Pioneers, for his helpful chapter on Paul and Margaret, written in 2007. Services First Presbyterian Church 219 E. Bijou St. Colorado Springs, CO.
