My Life Story George William “Bill” Bruehl, Professor Emeritus, passed away on December 20, 2016, in Meridian, Idaho at the age of 97. He was born on September 10, 1919 in Mentone, Indiana to Henry Waltropp Bruehl and Mary Frances (Dawson) Bruehl, and his big sister, Frances. Bill’s father was a high school teacher and in this occupation, the Bruehls moved frequently. Most of Bill’s formative years were spent in Evanston, Illinois and in Montana where he attended grade school. In 1933, at the height of the depression, Henry Bruehl lost his teaching job so the Bruehls moved to Green Forest, Arkansas, where the family farmed and Bill completed his high school education in 1937. Bill obtained employment in the Plant Pathology Department at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, enrolled in college and graduated with a BSA degree in 1941. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison from 1941-1942. Bill took a break to serve his country with the USN in WWII as a naval aviator in the Pacific where he served for a time on the USS Enterprise. After the war, he returned to Madison, Wisconsin where he obtained his PhD. in plant pathology in 1948. Bill worked for the USDA from 1948-1952 at South Dakota State College in Brookings in the Cereal Crops Division. It was during this time he met the love of his life, Arline, and they were married on February 4, 1949. Their daughter Janet was born in 1950. The family moved to Puerto Rico and Bill worked at the Rio Piedras Experiment Station from 1952-1954. Their son, Walter, was born in 1954 and shortly after, Bill moved his family to Pullman, Washington, where he worked for the Department of Plant Pathology at Washington State University until he retired in 1984. Bill served as an officer in the Pacific Division of the American Phytopathology Society and in the National Society. He authored a book, SoilBourne Pathogens, in 1987. Bill and Arline were active members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pullman for 58 years until they moved to the Meridian, Idaho area in 2012 to be closer to family. They enjoyed a few cruises and extensive travel in their retirement years. Dad loved road trips, McDonald’s coffee, hamburgers and Kentucky Fried chicken. He is preceded in death by this father and mother, his beloved sister, Frances and baby brother, Robert Louis. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Arline (Gauthan) Bruehl and their children: Janet (Richard) Halford of Kent, Washington; and Walter (Cheryl) Bruehl of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren: Risa (John) Roberts, Dean Halford, Adam (Hope) Bruehl and Christopher Bruehl; two great-grandchildren: L J and Isla Roberts. A baby Bruehl is expected to join our family in May, 2017. Our family would like to thank the staff at Meadow Lake Village, The Meadows and Journeys Hospice for the kind and loving care of dad in his last days. Our dad was a kind, generous, noble gentleman and will be very deeply missed by his family and all who had the opportunity to meet and know him. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1300 Lybecker Road NE, Pullman, Washington, 99163, (509-332-1985) or the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Touchmark at Meadow Lake Village. A graveside committal will follow at 3:00 PM at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. Remembrances may be left for the family at www.AccentFuneral.com.

We Entrusted George Bruehl's Care To

Accent Funeral Home

A local landmark in Meridian, Accent Funeral Home has been serving the community since 1986. The business was first established with a vision to offer services in a comfortable, homelike atmosphere. This vision is reflected in our building, a Tudor-style home built in 1938 for a local postman. When remodeling the house to accommodate the funeral home, much care was taken to preserve the original architectural integrity of the building. The Accent Funeral Home holds a special relationship with the Meridian community and is sensitive to the area’s changing needs, providing service and friendship to comfort those we serve....
