As a young child his family moved to the Ozark Mountains near Willow Springs, MO. He was raised on a farm and learned to work hard. JC attended school in Willow Springs. He entered the Army when he was 18. He trained to be a surgical technician. He was in the European Theatre serving in Namar, Belgium and Larave, France. He toured the South Pacific spending time in New Guinea, Philippians, Panama, and Japan. After returning to the U.S. he met Dolores Means at a dance and they were married 3 months later. They moved to the Greenleaf area where he worked for many years, later moving to Wilder and Parma. They spent 61 years together. Dolores passed away June 2009. JC was very fun loving and loved playing jokes on the grandkids. One of his favorite saying was “oh that’s horse feathers.” He always had a wink for the girls at the care center. JC is survived by 2 daughters; Colleen Ortivez of Nampa and Joyce Sorrell and her husband Ken, of Roswell, ID, nine grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. He has one brother Ivan Petrey of West Plains, MO, and 1 sister-in-law Elaine Petrey of Willow Springs, MO. He was preceded in death by his wife Dolores, sister Betty Jo Collins, brothers Clyde Petrey, and Elmer Petrey who was killed in New Guinea during World War II, and four infant brothers. The family would like to thank the staff of Owyhee Health and Rehab Center for the excellent care for the past 6 ½ years.
