Thomas E. Shaw

Thomas E (Tom) Shaw Tom Shaw took his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven on October1, 2010 with his family at his side. Tom was born in McCall, ID on May 26, 1926, the 4th and youngest child of Roy and Lora (Sis) Shaw. He graduated from McCall-Donnelly High school in 1944 and joined the Navy. In the summer of 1945, while on leave in Los Angeles, CA he met his future wife, Mary Catherine Feltman. It was love at first sight for both, and on January 26, 1946 they were married. Later that year, Dad was discharged from the Navy and he & Mom returned to the Shaw Homestead ranch in McCall. Upon his return to McCall, Tom was given a registered Hereford heifer as a belated graduation gift and the concept of Shaw Hereford Ranch was born! Tom & Mary lived in McCall for the first few years of their marriage. During this time Linda, Tim & Greg were born. In 1959 they bought the Home Place outside of Notus, still home to this day. They worked hard together, and as a family, to grow Shaw Hereford Ranch into a nationally recognized Hereford seed stock producer. Dad was very active on several boards at the community, state & national level. He started the first Performance Bull Test in the Northwest in 1969 in cooperation with the University of Idaho and he also helped initiate the Idaho Beef Improvement program and the IRM system in Idaho. He served on the National Beef Board, the National Cattleman's Association, the Idaho Cattle Association Board and the American Hereford Association board, serving as President of the ICA and the AHA. Dad was inducted into the American Hereford Association Hall of Fame in 2009. He was a 4-H leader for many years and was active in his church, both in Caldwell and Cascade. Dad was a kind, patient, gentle man who knew what had to be done and worked hard to make it happen. His word was as good as any contract and he set an extraordinary example for his family on what a husband, father and grandfather should be. He loved spending time in his old stomping grounds, the mountains of McCall, where many fond memories were formed with his kids and grandkids: fishing, camping, pack trips, picking huckleberries, and brewing campfire coffee. He will forever be remembered for the sly grin that made his eyes sparkle and always whistling a tune. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Catherine, a daughter, Linda (John) Draney of Nampa, two sons, Tim (Tina) Shaw of Cascade and Greg (Cleo) Shaw of Caldwell; 10 grandchildren, Terri Harder of Kahlotus, WA, Nick (Erika) Pettinger of Blackfoot, Brenda Pettinger of Nampa, Tucker (Angie) Shaw of Caldwell, Jeremy Pettinger of Grangeville, Tom (Sandelle) Shaw of New Plymouth, Marc (Tracy) Pettinger of Blackfoot, Sam (Janel) Shaw of Caldwell, Jaime (Kelley) Osterman of Eugene, OR and Lisa (Kevin) Bennett of Nampa; 25 great grandchildren, a sister Evelyn (Leon) Goodman of Gooding, a very special cousin who was more like a brother, Jim Hamrick of Meridian, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother John, a sister Mildred and a grandson-in-law Eric Harder. Rosary will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church on Thursday October 7 at 10:30 a.m.with burial later that day at the Veterans Cemetery in Boise. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Align Hospice - 940 E Carol - Meridian, ID 83646 or to a charity of your choice.
