Opal Louise Stockton

Opal Louise Stockton, 86, of Caldwell, Idaho passed away, peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2017. Before passing, she often teased, “I’m ready to go home with Jesus. HE is running late though.” She had a humorous outlook on life. Opal was born on November 9, 1930, in Prescott, Arizona and grew up with her two sisters, Helen and Carol. For fun the sisters would ride around in the desert, hunting rabbits. Opal loved to ride on the car’s fender and be the lookout. Arizona wouldn’t be her forever home; Idaho was. Opal, met the love of her life, William E. “Sonk” Stockton, at the Caldwell Friday Night dances in 1948. The sweethearts married on July 1, 1949 in Wilder, Idaho at Golden Gate Baptist Church. Opal would later teach Sunday school at the same church. After marrying, the couple farmed in Wilder and started their family, Sheryl, David and Dewaine. Opal was part of The Order of the Eastern Star, a fraternity of women and men dedicated to charity, truth and loving kindness. Her love of Pinochle came from being part of the Jolly Jane’s Ladies Group, where cards were played, drinks were poured and laughter happened. In 1963, the Stockton family moved to Caldwell, Idaho. They bought a little brick house on Canyon Hill, right at the end of Rochester Street. Opal would spend the next 53 years here, making memories, raising her children and loving her family. After moving to Caldwell, Opal began her career at Simplot. She started on the potato line, worked her way to the mailroom and remained a loyal employee until retiring as Mail Clerk in 1986. Opal enjoyed reading, word search, crafting and playing cards. But what she loved most of all was being a Grandma. Summers were filled with camp trips with her kids and grandchildren. Opal’s trailer was the heart of the campsite. The kids knew where to go for snacks and the parents knew where to find coffee. Opal knew how to bring family together, to make people laugh and how to play a great hand of Nickel Knocker. Opal was preceded in death by her parents, sweet baby Jalene Kae, her sister,Helen, husband, Sonk and her boys, David and Dewaine. Opal is survived by her daughter, Sheryl Barrie and her husband Roger; daughters-in-law, Gayle Stockton and Jana Stockton; sister, Carol Boston and Therman,; grandson, Ryan and Rani; granddaughter, Amy and Justin, granddaughter, Rachelle and Nick and granddaughter, Katie and Gonzo; great-grandchildren, Eva, Eliana, Carter, Nora and Walker, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Special thank you to Kindred Nursing Center and their wonderful staff. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Wilder Cemetery.
