Joyce Cully
July 20th, 2015
Joyce Cully Joyce Ellen Cully passed away peacefully at her home on July 20, 2015 in Eugene, Oregon while surrounded by family at the age of 87 following a massive stroke she suffered 13 days before. Joyce was born on June 30, 1928 in the township of Jefferson, Kansas to her parents Phillip and Berniece Heer. Joyce was the middle child and was raised on the family farm in Kansas with her four sisters and two brothers when she met the love of her life, Max Leroy Cully at a dance. They were married on October 20, 1945 in Gage, Oklahoma where they resided after Max was discharged from the Navy in 1946. Joyce moved to Eugene with her family in 1955. During Joyce’s early life in Oregon, she enjoyed nurturing her children, camping, and fishing while in later years, gardening, bingo, and cheering on her Oregon Ducks. Friends and family will always remember her thoughtfulness, loving heart, cookie baking, and having the most beautiful flower garden in the neighborhood. She was affectionately known as the cookie and flower lady. Joyce’s love and generous support to her family and longtime neighbors was her hallmark in life. She was an amazing and beautiful woman as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Joyce retired in 1990 from the Bethel School District after 20 years of service when at that time she was the head baker at Willamette High School. She will always be remembered by ‘her kids’ and school staff for her positive attitude, infectious smile, but most of all, her cinnamon rolls. Joyce is survived by her two sons, Gary Cully of Seattle WA, and Gordon Cully of Woodburn OR; her daughter, Gina Sanstrum of Gresham OR; her sister Janice Charpentier of Eugene OR; and 6 grandchildren, Derek, Joshua, Sierra, Bethany, Ryan, and Stephen. She is preceded in death by her husband Max. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 24th at 11:00am at Lane Funeral Chapel. Viewing will be on Friday, July 24th from 9:30am until 10:30am. Donations in-lieu of flowers can be made to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center Hospice.
