Hope Grazer Grazer, Hope Irene (nee Samson) Passed away peacefully at Valley West Care Center on Tuesday, March 3, age 88. Dearly loved partner of Bob Bauder (deceased) for 23 happy years. Loved mother and mother-in-law of Terry and Christina, grandmother to Elizabeth and Rob Swartz, Kathleen and Annie Grazer; great-grandmother to Jessica and Nathaniel Swartz, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also loved mother and mother-in-law of Gloria and Brian (deceased) Sanborn of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Hope was a dedicated career primary school teacher, as were her mother Kathleen Samson and daughter Gloria. She retired after many years at Twin Oaks Elementary School, previously teaching at Coburg and Veneta. As a divorced mother, her summers were spent attending education classes at the University of Oregon or working as a waitress, even a bean boss and private detective. She tried hard to provide a good education and music lessons for her two children. Thank you Mother, for everything you did for us. Hope was a charter member of the Eugene Emblem Club, a women’s group at the Eugene Elks, and Delta Kappa Gamma, a group for women educators. She valued her long membership and friendships in both organizations. Please reserve April 25th, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., for Hope’s “Celebration of Life.” It will be held at Solvang Retirement Living, 1202 Jacobs Drive, Eugene, where Mother recently lived for eight years. Her full obituary will be published in the Register Guard on Sunday, April 19. Hope Irene Grazer was born November 24, 1926 to Kathleen Irene Samson (nee Terry) and Elmer LeRoy Samson in Marshfield, Oregon, (now known as Coos Bay) passed away peacefully at Valley West in Eugene, Oregon on March 3, 2015 at the age of 88. Hope was an only child. She was raised in Reedsport, Oregon, attended local schools and participated in Rainbow Girls. At 16, she had graduated from high school and went to attend Monmouth’s College of Education (now named Western Oregon University). While there she became a member of Collecto Coeds and was elected president of Todd Hall. Hope’s first teaching position was in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Her last school was Twin Oaks Elementary in Eugene. Her two previous schools were Coburg and Veneta Elementary schools where her mother, Kathleen was also teaching. All 34 years of her teaching career were in Oregon. Hope and her mother Kathleen, were both charter members of Eugene Emblem Club #281, part of the Eugene Elks. She was also a long time member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a group for women educators. Hope cherished her membership in both organizations and the many friendships she made. In later years, Hope became a devoted crocheter of lap robes which were donated to the Roseburg Veterans’ hospital patients on behalf of the Eugene Elks and Emblem Clubs. She greatly appreciated the yarn and donations from these groups and friends who kept her in good supply for this project. Hope had two children, Terry Edwin and Gloria Irene during her years of marriage to Richard Edwin Grazer. After divorcing, she taught during the school year and often attended the University of Oregon for summer school. When not studying, she had a variety of summer jobs – waitressing, being a bean boss and even a private detective. Hope worked very hard to provide a good education and music lessons for both of her children. As her children grew up and moved away, Hope had the good fortune to meet Bob Bauder, also a local resident of Eugene and an only child. They had wonderful times together dancing, travelling and joining their friends in the Eugene Elks Camper Club. Bob and Hope had 23 happy years together before he passed away. Hope is survived by her son Terry and daughter-in-law Christina Grazer, granddaughter Elizabeth and husband Rob Schwartz, granddaughters Kathleen and Anni Grazer; Great-grandchildren Jessica and Nathanial Schwartz, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is also survived by her daughter Gloria (nee Grazer) and Brian (deceased) Sanborn of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Thank you Mother, for all the things you did for us. Thank you also to the friendly staff and residents at Solvang where Hope recently lived for 8 happy years, followed by her last 3 months in the wonderful care of staff and new friends at Valley West Care Center. It was a very special coincidence that one of her medication nurses was a previous year 1 student from Twin Oaks Elementary School. This brought a lovely smile to both Hope and her daughter Gloria, also a teacher. Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend a celebration of Hope’s life on Saturday, April 25th at 10:30 a.m. at Solving Retirement Living, 1202 Jacobs Drive, Eugene, Oregon. Please join her children, family and friends for a joyous gathering of stories and music. Happy colors maybe worn. For you, Mother with love always. Mothers Are Special People Words of Wisdom by Helen Steiner Rice Mothers are special people In a million different ways Who meant loving compliments And many words of praise. Except on days like this one, Mom, you seldom ever hear The compliments that you deserve each day throughout the year- But you’re very understanding, so you certainly must know That you’re appreciated more than words could ever show.
