Emma Dell Primrose
March 23rd, 2019
Emma Dell Primrose The story of Emma Dell Primrose Emma had a plaque on her wall that was given to her by her older sister Lola it read as follows. EMMA ALL EMRACING Emma was loved by all, always having a kind word and hug, for all who were lucky enough to Be touched by her life. FLATTERING AND MASTERFUL She was usually dressed to the nines, and known by her grandchildren as the “Barbie Doll Grandma”. She would always notice and compliment others around her. She was born with a desire to be accomplished. She mastered sewing, painting, singing, and dancing. WILL NOT BE OUTDONE Emma enjoyed games, and winning. Halloween was a special holiday and she would come up with some pretty outrageous costumes. Once she dressed as a slightly off “Playboy Bunny”. She wore mismatched stockings, high heels and earrings, bunny ears and a huge smile on her face with a twinkle in her eye. She would trick or treat the neighbors in this outlandish costume to bring joy to all and a good belly laugh. We love to look at this picture and smile. BOTH CHARMING AND JEALOUS Emma attracted both men and women alike, she had such a wonderful spirit and a zest for life. Don’t mess with Harold… his affections belong to only her. THE INDUSTRIOUS ONE What can we say? Everything stated above attests to this. Lola knew her sister well and this plaque was made for her. THE BEGINNING Emma’s father was Ora Ruben DeBruler. He was born on July 30, 1890. He was born in Ellsworth, Kansas to Eward Charles DeBruler. His mother was Emmaline Hupp. He had a twin sister Ethlyn who died in childbirth and another sister named Edith. Ora played the Saxophone in a well-known band the “Billy Rese Dance Band”. Ora joined the Navy and was stationed in Bremerton, Washington. Emma’s mother was Mary Clara Bell. She was born September 8, 1898 to a single mother. Her Aunt Mary, who she was named after, found Mary Clara sleeping in a dresser drawer in a home in Portland, Oregon. Aunt Mary took Mary Clara and gave her to James Daniel and Johnann Conner. They lived in a small shack in Locomb, Oregon. They were very poor and life was cold and wet in the shack, which had no protection from the outside elements. Her Uncle Jim Conner donated the land for the Locomb cemetery where the Conner family are buried. When Mary Clara was about 8 years old, her adoptive mother died. The good citizens of Locomb felt that a young girl should not be living alone with her adoptive father who was now a single man, so she went to live with her Aunt Mary in Bremerton, Washington. Her Aunt Mary was a medium and Mary Clara remembers many séance’s being held in their home. Aunt Mary was a woman who believed in manners, and taught Mary Clara to be a proper and well-mannered young lady. One fateful night Mary Clara met a handsome and dashing Sailor named Ora DeBruler. After dating a while they were wed February 26, 1916. Ora was shipped overseas and Mary Clara moved to Kansas to live with his family, who lived on a farm. Ora’s dad was not a nice man, very stern and ill tempered. It did not take long for Mary Clara’s kindness to win him over. When Ora came home from WWII they moved to Hutchinson, Kansas. Ora bought a motorcycle and Mara Clara and he hit the road to travel and spend much needed time together. Their carefree life was short lived as low and behold a beautiful daughter named Lola Mae graced their lives on March 11, 1923. Four years later Emma Dell was born on June 11, 1927. Emma’s first name was after Ora’s mother Emmaline, (who died when she was 4) and her middle name was from a close family friend Della Spalding. The Spalding’s were an older couple who lived next to the DeBrulers, they took a liking to the young family, treating them like their own. On August 19, 1931 they were blessed again with another beautiful daughter, they named her Elinor Ann and now they had a blessed family of five. In or around 1939 Della Spalding passed away and Mr. Spalding moved to Vallejo, California. He secured a job at Mere Island Navy Base and sent Ora an application for employment as a machinist. Ora joined Mr. Spalding and Mary Clara and the girls stayed behind until the girls were out of school. They sold all of their belongings except what their small trailer could hold. Ora wanted to make sure the family had safe travels and enlisted their cousin Charles and a friend to accompany them. After a safe trip to Vallejo Charles and his friend returned to Kansas. Ora had rented a small flat above a bakery which did not allow pets, having a dog named Smokie, they had to board him elsewhere, except when the girls would sneak him in at night. They eventually bought a 3 bedroom home on Benica Road in Vallejo. Emma started junior high school there, she enrolled in dance classes and also became a majorette. Around 1943 Ora and Mary Clara purchased a 120 acre farm in Creswell Oregon. It had a small farm house and also a building across the road that was half a chicken house and half a storage room. Emma and Lola were given the opportunity to make this their bedroom. They quickly realized they could sneak out and the fun began….boys were on their mind. Emma finished her high school years at Creswell High School with a diploma. Moving forward they procured employment at a restaurant called Snappy Service in Eugene as waitresses. Her future husband Harold Rowland Primrose driving taxi drove by and noticed a striking woman in the window and decided to go in and check it out. Not realizing he had saw Lola, he encountered Emma, and his infatuation began. He fell for Emma who was engaged to a military man, that she had met in Vallejo, but Harold won her heart and eventually stole her away. Her parents were not happy as Harold was 9 years older, previously married and had a daughter named Yvonne, who Emma loved as her own. Harold went to work for Eugene Laundry and Linen Supply, with a route delivering and picking up laundry and linen from businesses in and around Willamette Valley. Ora came to work at the laundry and he decided Harold was an ok guy. Harold had a great rapport with his clientele and would get goodies and snacks from almost every stop. Emma and Harold were wed on April 1, 1945. This gave a new meaning to April Fool’s Day! On February 5, 1946 Ronna Lee was born. Thirteen months later Harold Alan was born. In 1947 they bought their own home on Old Dillard Road where they lived for over 50 years. Two more girls were born, Mary Lynn October 1, 1951 and Loann February 26, 1954. Many vacations were spent in San Francisco where Harold’s mother Hazel Proctor lived. Hazel had a heart of Gold, loved her son Harold and the love between Hazel and Emma was mutual. Emma and family enjoyed camping and trips to the coast and mountains. Harold and Emma purchased property out of Yachats and would travel every Friday night, when Harold got off work, to work on a vacation cabin that they were building. Emma would pack an individual sack dinner for each family member to enjoy on their long drive there. Harold and Emma had a very passionate relationship, many fights were had with many more make ups. Domestication seemed to suit Emma as she set out to make their house a home. She was a great cook, seamstress, making all her girls school clothes. Emma loved music and would sing or whistle her way through her daily housework until it was time to get ready for Harold to get home…this meant time to change into his favorite outfit. He loved Emma in shorts and high heels!! Emma and Harold would entertain and would have friends or neighbors in for cocktails and cards. They developed a loving relationship with the Moyer family up the hill. They had a lot in common, each family with 3 girls and 1 boy. Emma and Darlene enjoyed the time together and the younger kids had daily adventures exploring the meadows and fields surrounding their homes. Ronna and Harold Alan, who was called Butch, also had great friends next door and down the hill. Besides being a great wife and mom, Emma pursued other interests. She belonged to a sewing club, red hat society and also began taking oil painting lessons. She loved to work in the yard and enjoyed being outdoors. Life moved on for Emma and Harold, the kids grew up and moved out, and Harold retired. They bought travel trailers, campers, and eventually a motor home and enjoyed a few winter trips to Arizona hooking up with their snowbird friends. They bought a lot on the Siuslaw River with several couples and enjoyed much time camping on the lot together. Emma loved Hawaii and was fortunate to go many times with her sister and also daughters and their families. THE CHILDRENS STORIES Yvonne held a special spot for Emma’s heart. She did not live with the family and did not get to participate in everyday life. As an adult there was much more family time spent together making Emma’s little family whole.
