Marion Elizabeth “Betty” Hughes Kaldenbaugh, 89, passed away peacefully September e, 2012 at San Nicholas Assisted Living in Tucson, Arizona. Betty was born in Columbia, South Carolina on November 23, 1922 to Willie Leak Sherard Hughes and Burr Durell Hughes. Betty was popular University of south Carolina May Queen. She is predeceased by her three sisters; Agnes Frances Everett Dixon, Mary Douglass “Bobbie” Hughes, Yancey Sherard Daniel and two brothers; Burr Durrell Hughes, Jr. and William Sherard “Bill” Hughes. Her husband, Henry, died in 2007. Elizabeth and Henry moved to Tucson in 1946 and raised six children. Betty is survived by her six children: Dr. Henry Kaldenbaugh and his wife Martha, Lucy Martin, Mary Kaldenbaugh and her husband Ron Garfinkel, Kathryn Sullivan and her husband Thomas, Christopher Kaldenbaugh and his wife Jan and Nicholas Kaldenbaugh and his wife Ann Toomey. She also leaves eleven grandchildren; Jacob Kaldenbaugh and his wife Amanda, Cassie Rathbun and her husband Bryan Rathbun, Travis Kaldenbaugh, Ben Martin, Gregory Martin, Timothy Martin, Phoebe Garfinkel, Megan Sullivan, John Sullivan, Thomas Sullivan, Jr., Mia Kaldenbaugh, and two great-grandchildren; William Kaldenbaugh and Kathryn (Kate) Pride Kaldenbaugh. Betty received a BS degree in Library Science from the University of South Carolina. She had a passion for books, was a wonderful cool and a great gardener, as evidenced by the gorgeous bed of roses in her patio which she nourished with a “special” feeding system developed over the years in the Tucson desert. She loved to visit religious destinations all over the world. Betty will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her children have fond memories of her as an energetic, fun loving mom always ready for an adventure. In her later years, she took great pleasure in hearing about the activities of her children and grandchildren. As a lifelong volunteer to the church Betty was a deeply spiritual woman who took great comfort in her faith, remaining an active member of the Lay Carmelites until her death. The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at San Nicholas Assisted Living for the wonderful care and comfort they provided to our mom. In lieu of flowers, any donation should be sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in memory of our mother. Rosary will be recited 7:00 PM, Friday, September 21, 2012 at Bring’s Memorial Chapel, 236 S. Scott Ave., Mass will be offered 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic church, 601 E. Ft. Lowell Rd., Burial will follow in Holy Hope Cemetery.
