Alfonso "Al" P. Prieto
March 25th, 1918 - August 4th, 2017
Alfonso P. Prieto "Al" , 99 passed away in his sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, August 4th, 2017 in his home in Tucson, Arizona. Alfonso was born March 25, 1918 in Mexico City, Mexico. His parents later immigrated to the state of Texas where he received his early school education. Raised working on farms in his early youth, he learned the responsibilities associated with hard work which stayed with him his whole life. In August 1942, Al married the former Mary Diaz in Oslo, Minnesota when America entered into the Second World War. Al served with the U.S. Army from December 1942 through December 1945. He served in Canada and Alaska working on the Alcan Military Highway and then served in the South Pacific with the 140th Quartermaster Truck Company supporting the Marines with supplies on Iwo Jima in March 1945. Al was a proud veteran to his adopted country. After his service, Al and Mary settled in Lorain, Ohio where they raised their family. He worked as a pipe fitter at the former National Tube, now US Steel plant working himself up to a Maintenance Manager in the Seamless Pipe Mills and retired after 31 years of service. In the summer of 1978, Al and Mary moved with their daughters Irene and Cristina (Tina) to Tucson. where they remained life long residents. Al was a past member of the United Steelworkers Local 1104 and the U.S. Steel Management Club. He was also a member of the Mexican American Citizen Club, all in Lorain, Ohio. In Tucson, he was a member of the South Tucson Lions Club, was Rookie of the Year for 1979-1980 and served as President form 1982-1983. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. He continued his lifelong faith in the Lord, being members of Sacred Heart Chapel in Lorain, Ohio, Our Mother of Sorrows Church and St Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Tucson, Arizona. Al is survived by daughters Irene Prieto and Cristina (Glen) Cioca of Tucson, sons Al Jr. and his wife Phyllis of Huron, Ohio, David and his wife Jane of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Vincent and his wife Martha of Lorain, Ohio and Jaime of Tucson. Alfonso has 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Romulo and Asuncion Prieto, Mary, his wife of 65 years, brother Theodore, sister Linda Delgado and grandson Michael Kindle. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 10th from 4 to 7 pm with Rosary at 6pm at Brings Funeral Home, 6910 E Broadway Blvd. Tucson, Az 85710 Services Friday, August 11th at 10 am at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 1800 South Kolb Rd Tucson, Arizona Burial following mass at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery 2151 S Avenida Los Reyes, Tucson.
