Emma Margaret Fox, Age 4, passed away surrounded by family on the evening of Friday, June 19th, 2020. Emma was a fighter ever since she was born prematurely on February 18th, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The day after Easter 2020, Emma was admitted to the hospital for multiple tests to determine what was causing her pain. It was discovered that she had an ileus with no medical cause. After much prayer, fasting, and medical professional guidance, and guidance from Emma, we knew that Emma did not want or need any more medical interventions in this life. Emma's premature birth at 27 weeks led to many complications. She was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus and Cerebral Palsy, and contracted Meningitis while in the NICU. Despite these diagnoses, Emma surpassed countless medical expectations with the help of her dedicated therapists and doctors. Multiple trips a week to therapy helped Emma learn how to sit on her own, take her first steps with her gait trainer, learn many of her body parts, and communicate with her loved ones with the use of a speech book. Emma loved going to therapy and loved her therapists even more. We want to thank Emma's therapists at Phoenix Children's Hospital who helped her thrive in life: Alex (OT), Lindsay (PT), Jenna (Speech), Miranda (Speech), and Natalia (PT). We also want to send our deepest gratitude to Emma's Pediatrician, Dr. Wendy Bernatavicius, who always went above and beyond to take care of Emma; her Neurosurgeon, Dr. David Shafron, who gave Emma a chance at life by performing complex brain surgeries and always treated Emma with respect when he met with her; and her other specialists at PCH. We couldn't be more grateful for the love and care Emma's therapists and doctors showed her. Emma did not let her physical limitations hold her back. She and her family traveled to many of their favorite places including Dodger Stadium, Disneyland, Newport Beach, California, and Chincoteague Island, Virginia. She enjoyed going to the local Children's Museum, Aquarium, and Zoo with her younger siblings. Emma flew across the country many times to visit family in California, Utah, and Maryland. In her short lifetime she lived in five different homes in four different states. Emma's favorite game was to use her left hand to grab a toy, or anything within reach, and throw it as hard and fast as she could. This was usually accompanied by one of her loudest screams and laughter. Emma would laugh even harder if the toy made a loud bang when it fell. "Where's Emma??" was another of Emma's favorite games. She would cover her eyes with her arm while we would look so hard to find her. Then Emma would throw her arm down with a little laugh, revealing herself as we would exclaim "There's Emma!" She would then quickly hide again. Emma started Preschool in Arizona in 2019. She loved interacting with her classmates, teachers, and school therapists. We feel blessed that Emma was placed in the classroom with her amazing teachers and therapists; Ms. Anna, Ms. Cindy, Ms. Amy, Ms. Marlene, Mr. Arnold (Vision), Ms. Cara (Speech), Ms. Chris (PT), and Ms. Pat (OT). Thank you for making Emma feel so at home and included in Preschool, and for showing her unconditional love. We will forever be grateful for the year she had in Preschool and the memories she made. We would like to thank ward members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for welcoming Emma into Nursery and Sunbeams and for supporting her family. We would also like to thank Hospice of the Valley for keeping Emma comfortable at the end of her life. Welcoming Emma to Heaven are her great grandparents Raymond and Betty Wiltsey, James and Betty Fox, Tracey and Ivy Sinclair, John Smith, Blaine Howell, and cousin, Brayden Sordo. Surviving Emma are her parents Travis and Alison Fox, younger siblings Madison, Raymond and Andrew Fox; great grandmother Elaine Howell; grandparents James and Margaret Smith, Kevin and Marsha Fox; aunts and uncles Ben and Rachel Smith, Steve and Mandy Sordo, Evan and Jennifer Knight, Kyle and Rebekah Fox, Danna Meeks, Bree Meeks, Rosie Meeks; and cousins Amelia, Lily, Camille and Chloe Smith, Lucy Sordo, Alex and Oliver Knight, and Brady and Hazel Fox. We are forever grateful for the four years we shared with Emma on this earth, watching her learn and defy all odds. We cherish the tender mercy of having that Easter Sunday together, and for the Savior's resurrection that makes it possible for Emma's body to be made whole again. We know that because of the Atonement and Resurrection we can be together again as an eternal family.
