Alan "Kent" Kent Van Wagenen
May 23rd, 1939 - August 10th, 2013
Alan Kent Van Wagenen, 74, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away on Saturday, August 10 after battling cancer for nearly 10 years. He was born May 23, 1939 in Provo, Utah where he attended Provo schools and graduated from Provo High School. He received his Eagle Scout award and served a mission in Australia for the LDS Church. In 1962 he married Arlene Dunford in the Manti Temple. He graduated with a degree in Music from BYU. He taught music in North Las Vegas for three years before moving his family to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he taught at Saguaro High School. He then began working at Motorola where he spent nearly 20 years traveling to Asia and Europe. He served in many positions in the LDS Church, including twice as Bishop. His passion was music. He loved tuning pianos, singing, and playing the piano, violin and ukulele. Watching his grandchildren perform brought him great joy! He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Arlene, and children Shawna (Christopher) Brady, Julie (Troy) Bingham, Mark (Jennie), Valerie (Ty) Moyers, and Evan. He and Arlene are blessed with 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Viewings will take place on Friday evening, August 16, at the LDS Chapel at 2265 South Hawes Road in Mesa from 6-8 p.m. and at 9 a.m. Saturday, August 17 prior to the funeral services at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the LDS Missionary Fund.
