Ronald Daniel Sundstrom
February 11th, 1935 - May 28th, 2023
Ronald Daniel Sundstrom, 88 years old, of Mesa, AZ passed away May 28, 2023. He was born to John and Ingrid Sundstrom on February 11, 1935, in Chicago, IL. Ronald was a first generation American as his parents both immigrated to the United States from Sweden. He was proud of his Swedish Heritage. He graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago, IL and attended Michigan Tech in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. On January 26, 1957, Ronald married the love of his life, Nancy Phyllis Bloom. They had three children together in Chicago and the family then moved to Mesa, AZ in 1970. Upon retirement, Ronald and Nancy settled into the Sunland Village East community in Mesa, AZ. Ronald was in the Army Reserves for 8 years, stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. and Camp McCoy, WI. He also worked as a Bricklayer for many years and received a lifetime membership for 50 years of service with the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers and loved the work. He retired in May of 1995 with Sun Valley Masonry. He then worked after retirement for Tony Coury Buick in Mesa in the parts department, He drove a bus for Salt River Tubing Recreation and a school bus for Mesa Public Schools and Gilbert Public Schools. Ronald was active in scouting in his youth and went on to be a scoutmaster. He served as a scoutmaster at Roseland Elim Lutheran Church, Troop 718 in Chicago, IL. He also served at Roseland Presbyterian Church, Troop 747 in Chicago, IL. and St. Peter Lutheran Church, Troop 453, in Mesa, AZ. Survived by sons, Daniel Craig Sundstrom (Sandra) of Grand Junction, CO., Mark David Sundstrom (Susan) of Thousand Oaks, CA; and daughter, Kathy Sue Smith (Alan) of Mesa, AZ. He is also survived by his brother's wife, Martha Sundstrom (Einar) of Fallbrook, CA, and sister-in-law Shirley Noyes (Ed) of Orland Park, IL; his eight grandchildren, Jonathan Sundstrom (Kate), Robert Smith (Nicole), Joanna Rogers (Stephen), Olivia Sundstrom, Ryan Smith, Julia Sundstrom, Hannah Sundstrom and Rachel Sundstrom and 8 great grandchildren Aurora, Rosalie and Eloise Sundstrom, Cutter, Lucy, Ace and Cal Smith and Natalie Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and wife. A graveside service will be held at Mesa City Cemetery at 1212 N. Center St. Mesa, AZ, 85201 on Friday, August 18th, 2023, at 9:30am. Followed by a Celebration of Life service at Victory Lutheran Church at 5946 E. University Dr. Mesa, AZ, 85205 at 11am. A luncheon will follow at the church.
