Harold Greenberg, affectionately known as Papa Harold and Hal, passed away peacefully at sunrise on Saturday, December 12, 2020, in Sun City, Arizona, at the age of 91 from complications of Covid-19. Harold was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, and was the youngest of five children. The son of Russian immigrants (Oscar and Tillie), Harold was a first-generation American. His father owned Oscar’s Beverages, a soda company in Buffalo that Harold helped operate. Harold was drafted into the Army during the Korean War to work at a hospital in France. He was also stationed in various European cities during his service. There, he developed his love of art, culture, cuisine, and travel. Harold enjoyed sharing his passion for adventure and coin collecting with his son, Lauren. They would often venture north to Canada from Buffalo to see the sights and even collect Canadian coins. Harold was an avid storyteller, and captivated many with his detailed, unique, and funny stories. Harold lived in Colorado shortly before he enthusiastically moved and made a life in the American Southwest, first in Albuquerque, New Mexico, then happily settling in beautiful Arizona. He enjoyed a busy and active lifestyle in Sun City, where he would attend concerts, holiday events, dances, parties, and even joined a pickle ball team. Harold was an important patriarch of his family, and will be dearly missed. Harold is survived by his son, Lauren, daughter-in-law Amy, granddaughter Melissa and her husband Keith, along with several nieces and nephews. Harold will be interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, receiving Military Funeral Honors. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Harold’s name to the Banner Sun Health Research Institute, where Harold chose to selflessly participate in the Brain and Body Donation Program to promote medical research and the development of life-saving cures.
