Alice Bird-Vittek

ALICE ELAINE BIRD-VITTEK 1935 - 2017 Age 81 years, she passed peacefully on February 20, 2017. Alice was born in Pikeville, Kentucky on March 4, 1935, the daughter of Lena and Isaac Earl Brooks. Raised with 3 brothers and 1 sister primarily in Belleville, Michigan, she attended Belleville High School where she was President of the Student Council in her senior year, had the lead female role in the senior class play, "Our Town" and was captain of the cheerleading squad. After graduating from high school, she married her high school sweetheart, Alan Moore Bird. To this union were born 1 son and 2 daughters, Alan Jeffery Bird, Karen Michelle Walshe and Laura Bird Long. Alice took great pride in being a homemaker, always making the best of what she had and creating a warm and inviting home for her family. Culinary delights were one of her special skills. Family Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were always an event to be treasured by all who ate at her table. At various times, Alice worked while raising her family, becoming a very successful business women. She was office manager at Barrcrest Manor Apartments in Rohrerstown, Pa., Vice- President of Al Bird & Associates and founded, managed and sold 5 candy stores, known as The Fudge Factory, located in Ocean City, Md. and Bethany Beach, Delaware. Her fudge stores were her pride and joy providing summer employment for many college students and family members over the years and helping each learn about operating a small business. Alice was a determined and gutsy women who seized life's opportunities as they came her way, never dwelled on the past, had a very strong work ethic and usually seemed to be in constant motion. Grass never grew under her feet! She traveled the world with friends and family and especially enjoyed a trip around the world with Vice President Spiro and Judy Agnew and to the holy land with her husband, Alan, and pastor, Father Larry. Her last trip abroad was with her son Jeff aboard a cruise ship that accommodated a limited number of dialysis patients and traveled the Mediterranean Sea. The sound of Italian opera blasting over the ship's airways upon the approach to Venice, Italy on a sunny afternoon was especially exhilarating and memorable. In 2004, she married Commander Albert Vittek and became a snow bird migrating from Annapolis, Md to Surprise, AZ. Always a very social person, Alice made many friends and acquaintances in Surprise as well as doing volunteer work at Banner Del Webb Hospital operating a cash register in the food lines at the hospital cafeteria. Always the trooper, she continued her volunteer work until 2 weeks before her passing, never letting the fact that she was on dialysis for the previous 6 years, slow her down. She is survived by her brother Charles Raymond Frigard and wife Janet, her children Jeffery, Karen and Laura, son-in-law Kenny, 4 grandchildren, Alan and Lena Walshe, Harrison Bird and Garrett Long, step grandchildren, Justin and Kevin Long, along with many dear nieces and nephews A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Berlin, Md.
