George Wayne (Boogie) McClanahan a current Sun City resident and former Del Norte resident George Wayne (Boogie) McClanahan 64, passed away Saturday January 14, 2017 in Phoenix AZ. With his family by his side. George was born July 8, 1952 in Del Norte Colorado to George Davis and Lucille Westfall McClanahan. He received his nickname "Boogie" lovingly from his older sisters at a young age while teaching him to dance to the "Boogie Woogie". "Boogie" at a very young age loved painting, knitting, woodworking, crafts and developed a real passion for flowers and gardening, anything that would keep his hands busy. During his teenage years, he began working as a cook, and developed a real talent and passion for the food service business. He would also work for Homestate Mines in Creede, Co. and Nelsons Meats in Monte Vista, Co. In 1970 he met and married Ruth Christensen of Monte Vista, Co. and would be blessed with three boys during that marriage. After high school, they were given the opportunity to manage and eventually purchase the "Speedy Burger" in Del Norte. This led to his career in the food service business and eventually changing the name to "Boogies Restaurant" in 1990. He loved cooking for the crowds of people, refining the recipes and baking some of the best pies and cinnamon rolls in the valley. Another of his great accomplishments during this time, along with his family was the restoration of the Wiley Mansion on Cherry Street in Del Norte. George was active in community, serving on the Tourism Board, Chamber of Commerce and the Del Norte Tree Board. Over the years, he generously donated to several local organizations and helped many people less fortunate than he. In 2009, plagued by failing health, the decision was made to sell the restaurant after 34 years and relocate to the Phoenix area in 2011. George is survived by his sons: George William (.Jennifer) McClanahan of Colo. Springs, Co, Christopher Lee (Heidi) McClanahan of Del Norte and John Paul (Suzanne) of La Jara, Co, 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by Sisters Phyllis Bennett and Alice (Kenneth) Black and one Brother Charles (Leota) McClanahan of Del Norte and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Beverly Jo Slade, Bowerman in Oct of 2016. Cremation was chosen and a joyful celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
