Charles Martin Doud

In the weeks before he passed on April 24, 2022, Charles Doud always had a joke at the poker table. He begged his friends not to take advantage of an ailing man—usually knowing full well he held the winning hand. When he was finally too ill to play, he sent his son Michael to tell them he wouldn’t be at the table that night, but also to caution them: “don’t take any wooden nickels!” He loved hunting, fishing, road trips to Iowa to visit family, keeping a perfect yard, enjoying a summer monsoon, looking at the stars and constellations, playing cards, and, like a true Irishman, telling a good, long story! Charles Martin Doud was born on August 1st, 1927 in Stuart, Iowa to Martin and Cecilia Doud. He was the elder sibling of two brothers, Larry and Patrick, and sister MaryAnne. He joined the Navy as a Corpsman during the Second World War, and served in Nashville, Memphis and Baltimore. After the war, he went home to Stuart where he met Marcella Mae Starr. Following his persistent courtship, Marcella finally agreed to go out and they were married soon after on June 24, 1950. They began a family and had five children: Michael, Gregory, Maureen, Patrick and Marianne. The family moved to Bozeman, Montana in 1962, and Charles started a career with the Soil Conservation Service. While in Bozeman, he and his family went on many family picnics to the Madison River and took trips to Yellowstone National Park. He took his sons camping with the Boy Scouts, deer hunting, fishing and golfing. He and Marcella belonged to the Elks Lodge, where they had many friends. In 1981, the SCS moved them to Casper, Wyoming, and they lived there for nine years. While there, he enjoyed his boat and weekend trailer at Alcova Lake, fishing and boating on the weekends. Charles and Marcella moved to Tucson, Arizona around 1990. He earned his real estate license and worked in property management around Tucson until he retired. He and Marcella travelled to Hawaii for their 50th anniversary, a highlight of the trip being when they visited the USS Arizona. Charles held a lifelong dream to connect with his distant relatives in Ireland; in 2009, he visited his ancestral home town of Cong in County Mayo, where he enjoyed a pint of Guinness at the pub his family still owns, Lydon Lodge. He and Marcella had been married 67 years when she passed in 2018. Charles moved to All Seasons Center in 2020, where he quickly created many fulfilling friendships. Charles was preceded by his father, Martin, and his mother, Cecilia, his siblings, Larry, Patrick and MaryAnne, and his wife, Marcella. He is survived by his five children (Michael, Gregory, Maureen, Patrick and Marianne), seven grandchildren (Trent, Jordon, Ashley, Carter, Cory, Megan and Austin), and two great-grandchildren (Sadie Marcella and Samuel Charles). A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 2, 2022 10:00AM at Santa Catalina Catholic Church in Oro Valley, Arizona. Flowers and cards may be sent to the church. https://youtu.be/swDIQNKKGJ0
