Jean Margaret Mundy
January 27th, 1922 - August 22nd, 2017
In Loving Memory of Jean M. Mundy…January 27, 1922 to August 21, 2017 Jean Margaret Miller was born in Mankato, Minnesota the oldest of two children born to Erma Rae and Lyle B. Miller. The following year in 1923, her brother Robert (Bob) was born. Together they enjoyed a childhood in many Minnesota towns including Harmony and Fairbault. In 1938, Jean moved with her family to Keokuk, Iowa where she graduated from Keokuk High School and went on to attend Western Illinois University in Macomb and to graduate from Culver Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught school in Fairfield, Iowa prior to her marriage in 1947 to Norris R. Mundy. Following her marriage, Jean became a homemaker and mother to two daughters, Carlene and Mary. When her marriage ended, Jean returned to teaching and taught elementary age children in a number of schools in the Tri-State area of Iowa, Missouri and Illinois retiring from teaching in 1984 from Running Fox Elementary School in Kahoka, Missouri. Civic minded and active in many organizations, Jean was a member of PEO (Chapter U in Keokuk and Chapter DB in Tucson and the Order of Eastern Star, Elmira Chapter in Keokuk. As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk, she was also very active with United Methodist Women. Jean moved to Tucson in 2004 where she was a resident of Fellowship Square until 2016 when she went to live with her daughter Carlene and son-in-law Chris. While at Fellowship Square, she was well known as a greeter and as part of the welcoming committee to new residents. In addition to these activities, Jean also became a member of Red Hat Society and enjoyed the fun and fellowship she shared with her Red Hat sisters. She was much loved for her warm and friendly nature to all and truly embodied the idea of welcoming the stranger. While living at Fellowship Square, Jean met Bill Elser, who was her companion until her death. Together Jean and Bill enjoyed membership in the Lion's Club; concerts, dances and parties at Fellowship Square and many holidays, trips and adventures together. When Jean moved to Tucson in 2004 she transferred her membership from Trinity UMC to Catalina UMC where she was a long time member of the Morford Bible Study Class. In 2014, she joined Carlene and Chris at Ebenezer All Nations SDA church where she was baptized on November 14, 2015. A deeply religious person, Jean loved Ebenezer and its members and was enthusiastic at the prospect of their new building. She lifted many prayers toward this endeavor. Memorials in Jean's name may be made to the Ebenezer Building Fund. Jean will be remembered in many ways; devoted daughter, loving mother to her daughters and her sons-in-law, Chris and Mike; loving grandmother to her grandson Jordan and steadfast and loyal friend to all. She never slowed down until failing health made it impossible for her to continue to be of service to others. Her kind and generous spirit will be sorely missed. We will always love you and treasure the special gifts you gave us.
