Maryana Bollinger Vollstedt
May 22nd, 2017
Maryana Bollinger Vollstedt Maryana Bollinger Vollstedt was a fun loving, multi-talented and creative woman. Born in Oregon City, OR, Maryana attended Salem High School and graduated from Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) in 1948 with a degree in Home Economics. Maryana married Reed Vollstedt December 17, 1948. They moved to Eugene in 1950 and founded Reed’s Garden Center. Later the name was changed to Reed and Cross at a new location on Oakway Road. She went to every gift show with Reed and had a significant input into the items the store carried, bringing a woman’s touch to the business, that Reed considered invaluable. She loved to party, go to new restaurants, eat good food and enjoy a cold Chardonnay in a big glass. Maryana published over 20 cookbooks, nine of which were for Chronicle Books of San Francisco and sold internationally. She also wrote a bimonthly column for the Eugene Register Guard called “What’s for Dinner” for thirteen years, including a “Kids’ Cook” column – all while maintaining a commitment to family, friends and a welcoming home. Family dinner and family time were always a priority. During her business career with Reed, they were consultants for Garden Centers of America and worked as sales representatives for several flower companies. They enjoyed several trips through Europe and Asia, including an opportunity to bring four Korean orphans back to the United States for Holt International Adoption Agency. Maryana initiated the mentoring program at Cal Young Middle School participating for over 18 years during her retirement. This program paired students who were facing various life challenges with adult volunteers that would come to the school once a week to have lunch, play board games and share news about school events and friends. She and Reed were long time members of Wesley United Methodist Church joining in 1954. Maryana is survived by her four children, Julie Vollstedt Glogau (Tom) of Monmouth, OR, Scott Vollstedt (Katie Walwyn) of Eugene, OR, Gregg Vollstedt (Becky), Fall Creek, OR, Jon Vollstedt of Seattle, WA, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece, Mary Pilar Bollinger Hope (Larry) of Portland, OR and their two children. A memorial service will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church on Monday, May 22, 2017 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 1385 Oakway Rd., Eugene, OR 97401 or to Cal Young Middle School (noting “Mentor Program” on the memo line of a check donation) 2555 Gilham Rd, Eugene, OR 97408. Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary.
