It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Christine ‘Chris’ McCooey nee Sack, a beloved mother and grandmother. Chris departed from this world on May 23, 2023. Chris was born on May 4, 1941, in Springfield, IL to Richard and Edna Sack. Her family did not remain in Illinois for long however, moving back to Wisconsin. Chris was raised in Pewaukee. Chris attended Carroll University and while there she was named Miss Waukesha County, 1963. After graduate school at the University of Chicago she remained in the windy city marrying her husband, Brendan, in 1965. It was in Chicago where she raised her son, Brian, and daughter, Kristen, ‘Krickie’. Chris was blessed with three beautiful grandchildren, Aidan, Michael and Catherine from the marriage of Brian and Deirdre McCooey. Chris worked as a Social Worker, LCSW, and had a true calling for social justice and environmental causes which she expressed through her work, volunteer time, and donations. Chris loved nature enjoying hiking and birding. Her true passion was singing in church choirs, most recently at St. Phillips in the Hills after moving to Tucson in 2015. Chris is survived by her sisters Ann ‘Curly’ Hiatt in Whaletown, BC, Canada and Miriam ‘Bunny’ Bugnacki in Caledonia, WI. In celebration and remembrance of Chris’ generous spirit, the family kindly requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers in Chris’ name to Tucson Audubon Society.
