Nina Bell Allen

Nina Bell Allen (87) passed away peacefully in the presence of family, friends, and dedicated caregivers on September 29, 2023 at her home in Tucson, Arizona. Born November 18, 1935 in Pleasantville, New York, Nina was the only child of Wilmot Bell and Mildred Kelly. She attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and later joined the staff of the Reader's Digest in 1954. Rising through the ranks, she was responsible for such popular features as "Laughter, the Best Medicine." "Life in these United States" and "Humor in Uniform." In addition, she worked closely with Digest and freelance writers, producing a wide spectrum of articles for the magazine's domestic and international editions. At the time of her retirement in 1996, she was Assistant Managing Editor. After a move to Tucson following retirement, Nina spent many years as a docent at the Arizona History Museum, Tohono Chul and for the Patronato San Xavier. She was also a member of the Nantucket Historical Association and SouthWest Writers. Active in St. Philips in the Hills Episcopal Church, Nina put her editing skills to work on their 75th Anniversary publication and was engaged in capital campaign and other fundraising efforts. Nina will be remembered for her extensive travels throughout the world, both during her career with the Digest and following retirement, her sharp intellect, her wicked sense of humor and her loyal friendship. She is predeceased by husbands John Allen and John Langley. She is survived by her cousin, Donna Overholt of Tucson and step-daughters Alison Langley-Shields (Mike) of Switzerland, Stephanie Hutchinson (Kim) of Denver, and Karen Langley of Austin. Her family wishes to express deep gratitude and appreciation to her caregivers from Visiting Angels - Regina, Phyllis, Jade, Tessa - for their compassion, competence, and care. A graveside service in Valhalla, New York will be scheduled later. In lieu of cards or flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
