Donald Eugene Boerup
July 25th, 1933 - July 10th, 2017
Donald Eugene Boerup was born in Amboy, Illinois on July 25, 1933 to Raymond Henry Boerup and Amanda Hauri. He was born the fourth of five children. He was raised to be a hard worker and to get a good education. He finished high school while working, then joined the Air Force and served in the Korean War. Upon his return to the States, he met and fell in love with Geraldine Judd from Kanab, Utah. They were married in the St. George Temple on June 28, 1955. They soon moved to Logan, Utah to attend the Utah State University, where Don earned a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. Three children were born during their time at school: Kevin, DaNell and MaryLynn. After graduation, he became employed with Raytheon in southern California. In 1960, they purchased a new 3 bedroom house in the growing community of Fullerton (for only $17,000). Two more children were born while in California: Cynthia and Janeen. In 1967, a change in employment took the family to Chicago, Illinois where Don was employed by the Singer Corporation as a Quality Engineer. Their last child, Leon, was born here. Throughout his life, Don was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Don was introduced to the Church by fellow airmen while in the Air Force. He gained a strong testimony of it's truthfulness and was baptized early in 1954. He shared his testimony often and helped build up the Church wherever he was. He loved deep sea fishing and while living in southern California, made many fishing trips with friends and family. Another job change moved the family of 8 to Tucson, Arizona in 1978. It was in Tucson that his children started leaving the nest and starting families of their own. Don often bragged about his family and how proud he was of his 6 children and 25 grandchildren. He could often be seen asking bystanders in the grocery line, "So, how many grandchildren do you have?" He loved their shocked response when he told them he had 25. While in Tucson, Don secured a job with IBM with an assignment in Switzerland. He thought this was the best job in the world as he got to travel to Switzerland several times a year and Gerry was able to join him on one trip. Don retired from IBM in 1989 and started his own business, LaserXperts. It began as a toner cartridge remanufacturing business servicing schools, universities and local businesses. Because of his attention to detail the quality of the products and services were well received. When his son, Leon, bought the business in the late 1990s, Don continued working doing deliveries, then retired completely. Don and Gerry served in the Mesa Temple as ordinance workers from 2000 to 2007 and greatly enjoyed their service there. They served on the Thursday pm and Friday am shifts. They put many miles on cars driving up and back to Mesa each week. Don had some health problems beginning in 2007 with carcinoid syndrome. An operation removed most of the involved intestine and he was cancer free for many years. During this time his memory began to fail and he was later diagnosed with Alzheimers or dementia. This and other ailments eventually claimed him and he passed at home on July 10, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geraldine; 6 children: Kevin (and Cathy); DaNell (and Warren MacNeil); MaryLynn (and Adam Hepworth); Cynthia (and Alan Johnson); Janeen (and John Julander) and Leon (and Staci). As mentioned, he has 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and leaves a great legacy. He is also survived by a sister, Nan Boerup (of Kansas) and a brother, Christopher Boerup, of Ohio. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sabino Chapel at 9541 E. Snyder, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 10:00 am with the viewing at 8:30 am. Interment will be at the Binghampton LDS Cemetery.
