Joan B. Heistuman of Eugene, Oregon passed away on November 17, 2023, at the Pete Moore Hospice House in Eugene. She was born on February 26, 1929, in Butte, MT, the third of seven children to parents Arnold and Mary (Kirby) Borel.
Joan graduated in 1947 from Arcata Union High School in Arcata, CA. After graduation she became a switchboard operator for the local telephone company.
Joan married Mark Heistuman, the son of a local sawmill owner, on October 21, 1950, in Arcata. There they established a home and began raising a family that grew with the addition of six children. The family moved to Eugene, OR in 1969 where she continued to enjoy raising her family, providing opportunities and guidance as they grew into adults. She continued to find enjoyment with the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Mark’s retirement in March of 1988, they were able to fulfill her lifelong dreams of traveling the world.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Mark in December of 2015. She is survived by their six children, Paul Heistuman, Sandy, OR; Theresa Heistuman (Ron Phillips) Albany, OR; Barbara Kitterman (Doug) Eugene, OR; Mike Heistuman, Eugene, OR; Patricia Krupsaw, (Sam) Ellicott City, MD and Mary Hicks (Tom) Eugene, OR. Joan is survived by 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, two brothers, John Borel, (Phyllis) Albany, NY and William Borel, (Danelle) Seattle, WA, and many nephews and nieces that loved her.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter Catholic church June 22nd at 10:30 in Eugene. The interment will be at Lane Memorial Gardens. Arrangements have been made by Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cascadehealth.org in support of the Pete Moore Hospice House, Eugene.
