She was born December 19, 1926, to Ira and Jewel Hibdon in Imperial, California. From a young age Jewel learned strong values abut serving her country and helping family. From these experiences she developed a strong sense of patriotism, work-ethic and commitment to family. She always had a smile on her face, a great sense of humor, enjoyed life to the fullest, never had a cross word, and sought the best in everyone. She loved her family and will be missed greatly by all who knew her. She was an active life-member of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Chico Post 1555 and a County Fair Judge. She always had a sewing, crochet, or quilting project in progress and often entered her beautiful creations in the fair, as well as baking, canned goods and fresh baskets of agricultural products. Family gatherings were always more special by the anticipation of her addition to the table fare--especially one of her delicious pies or batches of cookies. In her younger years she played softball on one of Orland’s women's softball teams and inspired her love of the game in others. She loved the outdoors and many family outings were spent camping or fishing. Her values of being prepared, leaving nature as you found it, and her competitive spirit to catch the biggest fish was always a source of fun. Jewel worked for twenty-three years as a meat wrapper in the grocery industry; developing lasting friendships with her coworkers. In retirement, she and Dave traveled to every State in the Continental U.S.; logging over 200,000 miles in their motor home. Survivors include her beloved husband of forty years, Dave Mitchell; her three sons, Dennis (Jacqué) Rose, Dave (Karen) Mitchell and Robert (Kerrie) Mitchell; daughter, Shirley (Ron) Rabo; grandchildren, Kellee (Jon) Grob, Melissa (John) Johnson, Hillary (Brent) Reynolds, Paul (Jené) Rabo, Jeff (Janet) Rabo, Mark Rabo Krista and Robbie Mitchell; great grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ken and Edna Behrens and James and Lenoria Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Pearl Donaldson and Jo Mitchell; nieces; nephews; cousins and friends.
