Necdet Erez

May 20, 1941 – Dec. 14, 2015 A private committal will be held for Mr. Necdet Erez who passed away unexpectedly at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, this past week. Born in Denizli, Turkey, "Nez" as he was affectionately know to all of his friends and colleagues, was 74 years old. Nez moved from Turkey at the age of 18 to California, and attended his senior year of high school at Sequoia High School in Redwood City. It was there that he met the love of his life, Leah Barthel, and the two were married 3 years later. Nez was a dedicated husband and father; very proud of his being able to realize the "American Dream" with his hard work, and determination. A graduate of San Jose State University, he would attend night school, and in the morning, hitch hike to his job at I.B.M. For more than 40 years, Nez was employed with IBM and retired as managing engineer with the firm. Many fond memories will be cherished of his love and dedication to his large family that lives in Turkey. Leah and Nez would make annual trips to visit them, and other family relatives in Germany and England. A resident of the San Lorenzo Valley for 40 years, Nez enjoyed Balkan Dancing, golf, hiking in the redwoods, and forever enjoying the company of his grandchildren, watching them grow, and being a part of their lives. Nez was very proud of his volunteer work with youth soccer. At a time when there was no youth soccer league for girls, Nez coached the very first co-ed soccer team in the San Lorenzo Valley history; leading them to a county championship. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Leah Erez of Ben Lomond, his sons, Ken Erez of Ben Lomond, and Chet Erez of San Jose; his beloved grandchildren: Carl, Maggie, Malena, and Katiya; and his many siblings and their families residing in Turkey. Nez was preceded in death by his parents, and by his loving mother in-law, Irene Barthel of Ben Lomond. Any kind acts of charity can be made in his memory to Native Animal Rescue.
