Elon Reynold Froid

Elon Reynold Froid passed away in Aptos on August 9, 2012, at the age of 92, after a brief illness. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in1920 to Carl-Herman and Isabel Edwall Froid. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, Lon joined the Army Air Corps and served as a flight engineer in World War II. On returning home, he worked for Burroughs Office Machines, and then as a corporate auditor for J.C. Penney, from which he retired in 1982. In 1949 he married Ardell Bolder, and they lived in Minneapolis, then Spokane, Washington, and finally moved to Santa Cruz in 1972. Ardell and Lon enjoyed traveling abroad together, gardening and volunteering in their community, teaching English to the children of seasonal farm workers, among other activities. Lon was a member of First United Methodist Church of Santa Cruz, and was a founding member of the Scandinavian Cultural Center in Santa Cruz. Lon enjoyed learning about his Scandinavian heritage, and read extensively about history and world religions. He is survived by his three children Kristin Balder-Froid, Lisa Froid, and Curtis Froid; his daughter-in-law Lucille Vega; his grandson Austin Froid; and his sister-in-law Jean Froid. Lon is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Ardell, who died in 2008. Services will be announced at a later date.
