Tamara Asher

Tamara Asher passed away on May 17 in Santa Cruz at the age of 88. Born in Warsaw, Poland, she moved to Palestine with her parents as a young child, and then to New York before settling in Los Angeles after earning her teaching credential. Tamara was the first in her family to attend college. Tamara worked as an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years in the San Fernando Valley. She had a very special place in her heart for children with disabilities. Upon retirement, she moved to Santa Monica and so enjoyed her time there. She always used to say, "What took me so long to move?" Tamara was a crafts woman, a folk dancer, and a music lover. One of her favorite activities was going to the Hollywood Bowl with a picnic to listen to classical music. According to Tamara, her happiest moment was becoming a grandma in 1988 when her grandson Avi was born and then again in 1991 when her granddaughter Shayna was born. Tamara moved to Santa Cruz seven years ago to be closer to her daughters, Abbey and Lani. Tamara is also survived by Avi and Shayna Asher-Schapiro, and her brother, David Langman of Los Angeles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Asher and her son-in-law, Erik Schapiro. She was laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Home of Peace Jewish Cemetery in Santa Cruz. »(Do not delete this line. It does not print.
