Leonard Weitz
March 26th, 1956 - October 26th, 2021
Obituary Leonard Weitz passed away on October 26, 2021. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1956 to Joe and Jean Weitz. The family, including his two sisters, moved to Fort Collins in the early 1960s. Leonard spent his school years and adult life in the Timnath and Fort Collins areas. Leonard worked at Giuseppes Italian Restaurant as a delivery man and a pizza chef whose perfect pitch singing earned him numerous tips. He then worked at Lone Star Steel manufacturing steel pipes for the oil industry. Leonard worked next at a shipping and mailbox company downtown. He bought the business in 1984, knowing he wanted to be his own boss, and Downtown Mail was formed. He expanded the business to four locations for a time, then eventually cut back to one. For 37 years, he employed family and friends and new friends. He was effective as a boss, being kind when it mattered and serious when it was needed. He knew his customers and their preferences. Leonard talked, joked with, and debated with many people over the years. He knew his business inside and out, from memorizing zip codes countrywide to knowing how to pack anything for secure shipping. Leonard was self-educated and inspired many others to pursue learning and thinking for themselves. He met Maureen and her three-year-old son, Michael, in 1978. While courting Maureen, he loved and cared for Michael as his own son long before adopting him. Leonard and Maureen married in 1980, when he legally adopted Michael. A year later, Valerie Jean was born. The kids were the light of his life! He was a wonderfully hands-on dad, with lots of play and gentleness. He and Maureen lovedtheir kids well, taught them to be strong and independent, caring and appreciative, and true to themselves. What an independent, quirky, talented, humorous and respected man! A unique and deeply loved son, brother, husband, father, cousin, in-law and friend He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Jean, and daughter, Valerie. Leonard is survived by his wife Maureen, their son Michael and his wife Leila, his younger sister Phoebe Weitz, his older sister Sally Weitz-Michie and her husband Rex Michie, and many cousins, in-laws, friends, customers and acquaintances. He will be remembered, loved and missed. Stories about Leonard are likely to be recounted and enjoyed!
