Doug Gallagher, a beloved husband, father, brother, and devoted friend. Born in Kearney, Nebraska, he was 83 years old. In 1949, Doug’s family moved to Santa Cruz and became active members of Holy Cross parish, where all nine Gallagher children attended school. Their father, Frank Gallagher, coached football (at then Holy Cross High School) and their mom Ruth had a keen sense of organization and as her family grew she was a great resource to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as a mother, counselor, and friend. Following high school Doug served his country in the US Navy stationed at Pt. Mugu Missile Center. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he began a career in banking and subsequently moved to Santa Cruz. He worked for more than 15 years in the cable television customer service business. He has been a resident of Santa Cruz County for more than 45 years and he loved living in Bonny Doon with his wife Rose. He was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus Council 971 where he served as Past Grand Knight for the local council and Supreme Knight as a board member of the organization. At the time of his passing, Doug was a devoted spouse and caregiver for his wife Rose. His family, extended family, and his brother knights, will fondly remember him for his lively sense of humor, for his devotion to his Catholic faith, and his generous spirit. Many cherished memories will continue to be shared of family gatherings, trips to Ireland and Hawaii to visit family and friends. He is survived by beloved wife Rose Reitano Gallagher of Sotts Valley, his daughter Colleen Gallagher of Ireland, his brother Brother Ronald Gallagher FSC of Moraga, his sisters Kathleen Gallagher, of Amherst, MA, Sharon Gallagher of Solvang, Ca, and Maureen Chung of Kilauea, HI. He is also survived by his step daughter Nancy McNeil of Diablo, CA, step sons Joseph Reitano,of Belmont, CA, Peter Reitano, of Watsonville, CA, Rick Reitano, of Watsonville, CA, and James Reitano, of Glendale, CA. Doug was preceded in death by his daughter Amy, his father Frank Gallagher, his mother Ruth Gallagher, his sister Mary Pat Hacker, his brother Barry Gallagher, his brother Dennis Gallagher, and his brother David Gallagher. A funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Church (126 High Street, Santa Cruz) on Wednesday June 21, 2023, at.11:00am. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Santa Cruz. A kind act of charity can be made to a charity of your choice.
